Several recent threads have provoked this. Not that there is anything wrong with those threads, but the martini thread (with all its "you must always do it like this and you're wrong if you do it like that" commentary) and the $180 bottle of whiskey thread just leave me on the outside looking in.

So this is the whiskey thread for the rest of us. You know, the ones who do not spend more on a bottle of hooch than we did on our first gun! :D

For whiskey, I think Canadian Club is really quite all right. I do like mine on the rocks rather than neat, but I can go either way. Crown Royal is just fine also, plus you get that nice little ammo pouch with it. Last Christmas, I got two nice little tumblers with a crown suspended in the base. Talk about elegant! Hey, if it was good enough for the Queen of England, it's good enough for me!

For mixed drinks, I have come to really enjoy a Seven and Seven. (I got the notion to try one after watching Goodfellas). I guess I am a little of a closet snob on this one. It has to be made with Seagram's 7 Crown & 7 Up. No Sprite, no Sierra Mist, ... it must live up to its namesakes!

Anyone else here who finds enjoyment in these ... ah, "moderately priced" adult beverages?

I have been known to enjoy a Captain & Coke on occasion! It must be real Coke and Captain! Now due to meds I take I only have less than ten drinks a year, :D I pick my times very carefully!

They had a popular song some years back with the lyric "drinking wine spodie odie".

Seems wine spodie odie is the cheapest liquor you can buy mixed 50-50 with the cheapest wine you can buy.

I don't suppose you intended to get that "low-brow" did you ? :D

Just take any one of the "high brow" expensive stuff and mix it with diet Mountain Dew. That will give those guys heart failure! :D

I my poverty stricken college days, I existed on Ripple and whatever beer was cheapest by the six-pack or case at time of purchase. One fine day after some overtime loading trucks at night, I had a little extra cash, so I splurged and bought a fifth of Chevas Regal and put it away, figuring with just an occasional sip, it would last me the semester.
I went home one weekend, and later in the week, went to have a sip of my stash and was stunned and enraged to find a bottle that was barely wet on the bottom. After some cursing and yelling, one of my roommates confessed he and a date polished it off in one night while I was gone the previous weekend. Adding insult to injury, he bragged about how good it was mixed with Coca-Cola.

You want low-brow? I've got low-brow for you :)

Introducing the Pillkaller from formerly German East Prussia:

Double shot of vodka or clear grain spirit, thick slice of creamy liver sausage, spicy mustard.
Objective: Shoot the whole concoction down, no retching or throwing up. Repeat as needed :D

I think the Canadian whiskies, are pretty good and reasonable. Canadian LTD is the cheapest whiskey they sell in Florida, and it is fine with a mixer.

I'm not a drinker, but my experience is that whiskey isn't a liquor that is that sensitive to price, as I think, say gin is, or even the fermented stuff like beer and wine. Cheap wine/beer is wretched; cheap whiskey is drinkable.

While I definitely enjoy my higher end Irish Whiskies I am also not a snob when it comes to drinking something. To us taste is what matters, cost often doesn't matter (often it does). I just ordered a bottle of Midleton Dair Gaelach which is one of my favorite whiskies but I also really like a decent rum and coke as well. I like to think I'm versatile when it comes to drinking :)

No but thanks for asking ... :D
My idea was less expensive but still decent, not asking for ways to wind up in the gutter. That reminds me, didn't Canned Heat do a song called "Down in the Gutter but Free" ? I think we can set our sights a little higher that that! :D

Wow, Absalom, I'll keep your suggestion in mind if I ever feel the need to self-induce vomiting. :D
