Like most young shooters I started with a 22 rifle. After 50+ yrs of shooting a lot of 22's, handguns and rifles, I realize my affection for them is greater now than when I was younger.
With the years the quality and cost of my guns has gone way up but the fun that goes with loading a clip full of 22 lr cartridges never loses it's timeless appeal.
I love the smell of the powder, that distinctive "crack" when you pull the trigger, even the way they look and feel when your stuffing them in the clip.
Maybe I never grew up or do 22's posess a little magic.

I definitely agree with 22's being a lot of fun. I enjoy shooting my AR and my 460 but a 22 is tough to beat.

Good ammo is relatively cheap and it's easy to shoot good groups.

It might be odd but i started on a 9mm and while i do own a 22 its the least shot rifle i own. I shoot semi auto 308 more often then my 22. This is not a knock on 22 just happens to be that way

.22 is a great caliber for bear too. Learnt that on this here forum ...

LOL -- that right there is funny!

I have more 22 rifles than all centerfire rifles combined. I love the 22. I could not find a Rem. 40X Sporter so I bought a 40X target and made it into a Sporter and it is by far my most accurate and by far my favorite 22. Whether it is memory or the moment that makes you feel good about the 22 it doesn't matter. You are in love with the 22 like many of us here.

In closing-if the 22 is a good bear caliber I am amply prepared! ;)

One of my most fun activities is sitting in a lawn chair with my 22/45 bouncing cans. I'll go through a box (525) of .22's in an hour. More fun than a grown man should have.

And if a bear shows up, well..........

Just checked and I have more .22s now than ever before. 5 rifles and 2 pistols. It is a nice little round that is capable of handleing a great many chores including defense. Plus it's still cheap to shoot which promotes practice.
Sure there's the lure of the big bores, and the medium stuff, .38, 9mm, .357, .44, .45, .223, .308, and so on. But the thing about the .22 is you always have fond memories of it, be it out with Dad shooting or with your buddies. It's just a good little round and brings back fond memories for me.
And there's a Ruger Bearcat in my future too! Dale

I have always shot more .22s than anything else. Being poor I have to shoot more .22s and since I am lazy I don't have to reload. When I was a kid I had to buy by the box but now I buy by the case. Larry

You are not alone here are a few of mine!

Yep, its magic. :D
I think I own more guns in .22 than any other caliber. Most times when I go to the range I have a specific task in mind.
Whether trying out a new toy, testing loads, adjusting sights or what have you. But there's always a .22 along to relax with once the work is done. Of, course sometimes all I take are .22s. ;)

My first and fondest memories is going to my uncle's farm and bugging him to take me shooting. He had .22 rifle, semi-auto with a small mag. He would pull the rifle out of the closet and dig for loose rounds in an old shoe box. He would usually find a dozen or so. Would set up cans on a post. I was 8 or 9. Parents bought me my first 870 pump and a level action Winchester .22 the following Christmas, 1973. Best Christmas ever. I was hooked. Owned maybe 20-25 .22s over the years. Just picked up the Ruger LCR in the .22. Love it. Also own the 15-22, M&P 22, and a 22A target. Both my girls shoot and started them on the .22. My wife now keeps the Ruger .22 handy around the house.

I did not become a truly good pistol shot until I practiced Bullseye on college. A few years ago I fired a centerfire rifle at 100 yards for the first time in years, as a result of all my practice with 22s I fired a 1.25" group. When people ask me about purchasing a handgun I always recommend a CZ-75 WITH their Kadet conversion unit.

I absolutely love shooting my .22's. There is not much my 14 year old son and I can do together, we just don't seem to "click" with each other. But we both can sit out on the back porch together, and run through a box of 550 shells in no time with the only corrections from me is on safety, and thank goodness, I don't have to remind him hardly ever.

Sure, we pull out the bigger guns once in a while, but at around $20 a pop for a box of 20, that doesn't last long. It puts a smile on my face to watch my son shoot half-rotten apples and they explode :)

I agree I love my .22 pistol even if it is plastic junk. I just wish it was more reliable. One day I will grow up and get a real .22.

Like someone else said when I go to the range and shoot the big stuff whether rifle or pistol I like to bring out the 22 and use it to wind down. It's just so relaxing.

.22's are classic and timeless. There is no better way to while away a boreing afternoon than to just relax and shoot some tin cans or somesuch.
Yup---a .22 is the only weapon-be it rifle or pistol- that seems to calm and shirk off the doledrums-without much considerations towards anything but just shootin at sumthin.
Better---and a whole lot cheaper--than a session at a therapist---and in my opinion more productive. You can think while you have fun, take out your agressions and frustrations on a bottle, tin can, melon, turtles and frogs.
Whopping a golf ball has much the same results.
Blessings
