Am I the only one who appreciated the niche filled by the Freedon Arms mini revolvers

Gator, IIRC the hammer is exposed with the clip grip. That's a no-no with NAA minis. The hammer must be covered to carry safely IMO.

You might do much better with a Black Widow. The rifling in the BW is top quality. I never have figured out why the aces at NAA don't make their lr. and magnum minis that way.

Bought my Freedom Arms .22 Mag about 12 years ago for $40 from a guy I worked with. Not the most accurate handgun I ever shot but extremely well made. Still carry it sometimes.

All this talk of .22s for defense reminded me a of quote from Col. Jeff Cooper.
and I paraphrase here,,, "the 9mm is made for killing Europeans. For truly dangerous people use the .45acp".
That being said, I always thought the little NAA minis were a very interesting artifact and I have come close to adding one to my collection on more than one occasion. The Pug caught my attention at the gun shop last week. With it's rubber grips and night sites. I really like the look of the new "Earl" model too.
I agree that these little revolvers have their place. I'm just not sure where that is? on a chain around the neck perhaps? (interesting jewelry).

Primetime, I use a NAA Black Widow and doubt that the PUG offers any useful concealment advantage over it. YMMV. With the smaller magnum size mini revolver grips, it's easier to hide than a P3AT and will fit in the front pocket of any pants I own. It offers an inch more barrel (and sight radius) than the Pug, otherwise they're dimensionally identical. The Black Widow is scary accurate and a skilled shot could put the heat on an opponent at any reasonable self-defense range. I'll take it over a pocket knife, or more ammo.

CCI .22 mag. TNT Gold Dots will expand to between .32" and .36", even after penetrating four layers of denim. Penetration is between 7 3/4" and 9 1/2" in Perma-Gel, and they shoot exactly to POA in my fixed sighted gun. I can't vouch for expansion, penetration, or accuracy from the Pug.

ah - my bear gun - really - had a bear bothering at our fishing cabin. kept breaking into the kitchen window. we were in the cabin one day when he came around and all i had was the little 22 lr freedon, so i shot him in the head thru the window at a range of about 4". he fell off the gas platform and ran away, never bothered again.

Mine are by North American Arms.

They aren't the best weapon, but they are better than nothing. IMO no carry line up is complete without one. At the same time, no one should ever carry one as a primary if something bigger is doable.

I recently saw two of these little beauties in my local gunshop (in France). One in .22LR and the other .22 Mag. Is was surprised at their size. Now I want one. Concealed carry is illegal in France, but one under the pillow would be reassuring. The more I read about them, the more I want one. I had considered a Walther P22 as a quick access gun around the house, and am still quite interested.

I have read that .22 is not really suitable as a self defence gun, but when you consider that a P22 was used in one of the recent Finnish gun massacres, it brings it home to you how dangerous such guns are in the wrong hands. Like all firearms, I treat them with the greatest respect. I hope all who read this will do the same. Any abuse strengthens the anti-gun lobby.

I've had a Freedom Arms Mini-Revolver in .22 LR since the early '80's. Yes, It's usually a back-up to a back-up. I carry it in my shirt pocket in an old eyeglass case with a snap flap. Even in a pocket T-shirt. No one gives an eyeglass case a second thought, especially if you do wear glasses. Always with me after I get dressed, even if I don't leave home. -Ed.

I do feel the need to run around a pr of speedos if you really need to know-which is why I like the NA 22 mini so much. As for carry, I put it in a rolled up sock. Stuff it down the front of thw speedo and volia-men fear me and women swoon
PS this carry does NOT work as well in the back.

Does putting it in the back make you a "crack shot?"

I have had one of the Freedom Arms minis for years. No, it is not my first defensive choice. But then again, no handgun is. My nightstand .45 is simply there to get me to a 12GA or good rifle depending on what the range dictates. Underpowered? Yes, but I prefer it to a pocket knife and it rides neatly in any pocket or a small holster attached to a boot strap.

During my cop day, I carried a NAA 1 1/8" .22 Mag for a number of years as my second back-up weapon. Primary was either a 1911 or a .45 ACP M625. Main back-up was a .38 special Colt Cobra in an ankle holster and then the NAA in my LEFT front trousers pocket (I'm righthanded).

I worked as a house parent in a children's home for six months. Didn't have a snub .38 then, as the Cobra was a city issue BUG and I had to give it back when I retired. The NAA became my primary carry piece, with the M625 locked in my room.

Unfortunately, my #@&*#@ wife left me while I was in Kosovo and I never got the NAA back. I was lucky to get most of my guns as it was.

Has anyone put the larger rosewood grips from NAA on the mini .22 long rifle?

I would like to improve the grip on mine but don't want to spoil the concealability.

I have the larger rosewood grips on my 22 mag. The package is still half the size of a J-frame. The improved grip far exceeds any compromise in the size of the revolver. I would definitely order them again.

The only problem I had with them is that they didn't fit the frame properly so I cut down a zip tie to use as a spacer to keep the grip from rotating on the frame. My Black Widow does not have this problem with it rubber grip.

I may order the rosewood grips and if I encounter the same problem I will try a small amount of Locktite silicone sealer to fill the gaps and provide a more rigid fit. I used silicone sealer to create a more secure fit for a Tyler "T" grip on one of my "J" frames. It did a good job of stopping the "wiggle."
Notice I said "a small amount."...I don't want to glue the grips to the gun...

Getting back to the thread (we all drift from time to time) I had the Gendarmes round to the house in connection with my application for authorisation (a permit to you guys). The first time was to discuss my application. The second time was to ask for a copy of my electric bill to prove I live where I say I live. Are your cops as thick as that. Strange thing is that they don't normally do house calls. They must be so bored they jump at any opportunity to get out of the Gendarmerie.

When I applied for authorisation for my first batch of guns they never came near me.

Anyway, they said the application should go through no problems, so hopefully I will have my little BW very soon.

I still don't have my permit/authorisation but I have been told today that the gendarmes have approved it. Now I must wait for up to a month for the Prefecture (regional administration) to process it. They phoned me today to say they don't have proof of residence (electric bill) and copy up to date licence, but then said they were on the file in a different place. The gun will go rusty before I get it - and it's stainless!

I would never trust the judgment of a lawyer who carries a wuss pocket gun. Give me one who carries a SW revolver model number beginning with a 6 and ending with a 5, 6, or or 86, or a 1911 pistol. So, the answer is yes, you are the only one; I know of only one lawyer who would carry that ilk of firearm, and he is a total 150% *******.

Finally got my permit/authorisation and went immediately to gun shop for my NAA Black Widow. Haven't fired it yet as I can't get to the shooting range till the weekend. Also sent cheque off for a Walther Manurhin PP I had reserved, but don't expect to receive that for a few more days.

I bought this .22 mag brand shortly after they came out. 4 digit serial # and no safe way to carry it with a cartridge under the hammer. I could send it back for an updated cylinder but I've always figured if 4 rounds aren't enough I'm toast, so why bother. I've had mine near 30 years and doubt I've put a box of ammo thru it. Just a tad noisy and I'd be lucky to hit a sheet of plywood at 50 ft.

Doublesharp, if you have a friend who's a machinist, they could easily mill a safety notch on that cylinder. Just a thought.

Fired my Black Widow today. At 25 metres I only clipped the target with one out of five. At half distance I got 4 on the target, high and to the left. Have adjusted the front sight ready for next time. For such a small gun it has quite a kick. Would like to try it with the large rubber grips, if I can get them here in France.
