I was looking at a supposed WWII Mare Island flag. I thought it was very cool, but unfortunately, also thought something like that could be very easily faked. Thoughts?

Can't tell you anything about a "Mare Island" flag, but I believe you mis-understand the word/concept of "fake". Just about any flag you can think of has been replicated at one time or another. While not "original" replica flags are not fakes! Are you looking at a flag that is specific to the Mare Island NSY. or a US Flag that was used at Mare Island at one time, like flags that have supposedly flown over the US Capital Building? If the latter, how would you be able to differentiate a "Mare Island flag from any other contemporary US Flag? Is a flag marked this way what you are looking at?

My folks used to fly a 24 star flag over their traders tent at the rendezvous they went to. A surprisingly large number of people, when made aware it wasn't a standard 50 star flag, had no idea it was different. They saw red, white and blue and that was it.
