American Sniper

I did not care for it. In large part because I read the book. I did not think the movie came close to the book in any aspect. They portrayed Kyle as having to have PTSD because he was a killer. His wife came across as a selfish nagging bitchy woman. As with many of Eastwood directed movies it has a violence is always bad view. It got nominated for many awards by Hollywood. That should tell you something since those voters are for the most part liberals that hate the military.
If you know anything about guns and the military you will find many technical errors. Lots of scope turrent turning, target is super close and he is turning the windage turrent. A 7.62x54 rounds shoots through both sides of a plate carrier, that's two plates of penetration, from extreme range. Large drone aircraft flying at 500 ft or lower, I believe they are normally so high you have a hard time seeing them. The prop guys couldn't even do a good job on the M1 tank.
I do not think it did justice to Chris Kyle.

My wife and I just returned from the movie. I found it riveting and very moving. My wife was only vaguely familiar with Kyle's story and she was really blown away.

The most striking thing was at the end of the movie the theater was chillingly quiet. I think folks wanted to clap and discuss it with each other, but it was like there was a sense of respect and maybe even awe.

This is a must see movie for everyone.

An excellent movie. I highly recommend it.

Some people who prefer to worship Chris Kyle as a killer rather than as a patriotic American might find it too sophisticated. It was the same with his book; there were people in the customer reviews basically complaining that the book had too much about Chris' feelings and not enough details about exploding heads. Well, to each his own. The review I read in my newspaper complained about the opposite, that Clint Eastwood showed all this well-staged violence without questioning the reasons. In my experience, if people are beating up on something from both sides, it's probably doing a good job.

Be that as it may, I think it's a good sign that, quite apart from any debates over politics and strategy of our recent and current wars, people are making and flocking to see movies like "Lone Survivor" and now "American Sniper" that show our soldiers as unabashedly positive characters, unlike after Vietnam.

I saw it this morning at the 10 AM run and I now understand why it is nominated for Best Picture and Bradley Cooper as Best Actor. I really can't say anything about the movie without giving out spoilers except to say I took a few deep breaths when I came out of the theater.

Right now its got around 5-6 nods. I cant believe they are snubbing Unbroken though??? I saw the Hannity special on the movie last night--and I plan on watching it next week=as well as Unbroken. A certain loud-mouth is complaining that the wrong movies are getting the nods. I think Clint Eastwood and Jolie both--did an outstanding job making those movies--as wel as the families of the men they are about. I think Cooper--looks great as Kyle.

Saw it last night. The house was packed solid. Not sure there was an empty seat and it was playing in at least two theaters in the complex. At the end about 50% of the audience clapped briefly and then deafening silence as everyone made their way out. Never experienced that quiet of an exit before.
