Ammo Control

This was from 1998 and it's scary to think that politicians would go this route. I guess it would make sense to an anti gun person to think that by limiting ammo and components, violence would be reduced. Is that what's happening now? A reason for the current shortage?

I believe I just saw where one state passed a law requiring an ammo purchasing license, with strict requirements and limits. I don't recall what state it was but it was just about a week ago.

CA has some such law.

This should upset a few of the forum members:

I like the part about the controls being politically achievable and not provoking civil disobedience.

Interesting, but I don't know why anybody should find it upsetting. It's a law review article, sixteen years old, and written pre-Heller.

The latter-day conspiracy theory would have to go something like this: "The US government, in an attempt to restrict the Second Amendment rights of freedom-loving Americans, and incidentally, to cut down on gun violence in our schools and public institutions, is secretly and insidiously choking off the flow of .22lr ammo to the public. Because 22lr is the ammo of choice for school killers?"

could be ... at least some form of it.
we have factories with 22LR coming out of its machines like rain from a hurricane.
we have store shelves running dry hours after this level of production is delivered.
Yet, when I go to the range, I really do not see a whole lot of rim fire brass at my feet. in fact the last time I stuffed a bag with range brass, I found only 3 or 4 22 LR cases in it.

That suggests to me that the end result remains pretty lean despite production rates.

As I understand it, factories ship to distributors, who in turn ship to dealers.
What if, some of those distributors are deep pocketed gun control enthusiasts?
I'm sure Bill Gates would have the buying power for it.
So .. the essence of this old proposed law can conceivably be enacted without the law at all.

Well the reason countries with strict gun control laws have fewer incidents of gun violence is because the criminals do not need guns to use on the basically un-armed law abiding subjects.

no .. "Gun Violence" is a specific subset of the larger statistic of violent crime.
Stabbings and fatal beatings continue unfettered while they can show you some meaningless subset.
Ive never heard anyone say "at least he wasn't shot" when the family gathered around the casket.

Keep an eye on that buzz phrase "gun violence"
I've never seen it used in any capacity other than to misrepresent the problem

It was obvious at that time, BRADY was their god they worshipped. Everything hinged on it. They tolerated small victories by the gun owners on other gun/ammo/recordkeeping laws. They didn't worry. God BRADY would save them in the long run.

Kinda funny how things change..........

I feel we are rapidly moving towards two distinct classes of states. Approx 38-40 who respect the 2A and the other dozen that don't. It used to be that there a lot of middle ground or gray area. No more. the 38-40 states are decreasing gun control laws at a rapid pace. Constitutional right to hunt, better CWP reciprocity, etc. On the other hand, Places like California continue to add more and more laws.

Continually trying to outlaw guns and ammo is like trying to outlaw liquor. Oh yeah, we tried that once. That didn't work out so well.......

You can't buy ammo in NJ without a Federal Firearms ID.

Not to be political but, is the current Guvnuh of your State the one responsible? if so? mighty interesting that somefolks want himin a higher position.

Without getting into thread drift-there were comments made in the past 24 hours in the after math of the Oregon HS shooting. There were to the effect of "people being able to stock pile ammo in their homes"

Just another offshoot of the anti gun twidgits really.
We gave their way an honest shot.
We've had an ever escalating crime problem ever since.
That's more than enough reason to tell em to stuff it, and possibly enough reason to b slap em off their pulpits.
It's only life and death, and they have done nothing but lead us to slaughter.

With the EPS effectively shutting down the last lead smelter in America, the government purchasing as much lead ammo as budgets allow: the cost and quantity to us will go up.

CA has some such law.

You're thinking of SB962. It would have outlawed internet sales, required background checks for purchases among other things.

It was ruled unconstitutional in 2013 but they're working on the wording and we will see another more finely tuned version I'm sure. Gov. Moonbeam will sign it in a heartbeat.

"They" have figured out that making ammo harder/more expensive to obtain is a neat way around that pesky Constitution thingy...

They have also looked at a 5 cent/bullet "public safety" tax on both ammo and bullets.

Yah, BUT -

Going for the shock value in the news media, that makes it SO MUCH worse.

About 60 years ago, in a English Literature class, the writing assignment was a short story, preferably a mystery.

I remember an excerpt from a young lady's story. She wrote "he died dead of a deadly death". I have no doubt she had a long lucrative career as a news editor somewhere (& yes, she was blonde).

The scariest part of the article is the level of thought ,organization and planning people who oppose gun ownership and use dedicate to taking away a right. I believe that unless we remain vigilant and united we could lose all of our rights!
