I just purchased a 41. I talked to a Smith rep. up in Springfield about ammunition and he told me that the gun shoots well with CCI Minimags. He told me definitely NOT to use Federal bulkpack from Walmart because the ammunition was too inconsistent and would produce jams and failure to cycle.

We've been shooting the gun with minimags and the Smith rep is certainly right about the gun working well with this ammunition. It cycles perfectly and it produces tiny groups. Still, I wonder about the Federal bulkpack. At $13 and change for 550 rounds it costs less than 1/4 the price of minimags. I use bulkpack exclusively with my .22 revolvers (two 617s and a 17) and it works extremely well with them. It's accurate, burns fairly cleanly, and seems to be consistent enough.

So, my question is: have any of you tried the Federal ammo with your 41? And, what kind of results have you had with it?

I buy the Fed Champions bulk(hi velocity). I'm an informal plinker. For the price of bulk I can tolerate a hangup here & there. I bought the 41 for economic shooting enjoyment.

I was informed that standard velocity or anything in the 1000-1100 fps range works best and allows for the least abuse of the pistol.
many people use minimag or higher velocity. If I am not mistaken it is partially due to older springs. If your springs are good, standard velocity is the way to go.
IMHO/IIRC

CCI blue. I buy them by the case and use them for bullseye shooting and have very very few problems.

If the 41 is anything like my two modified Ruger 10/22 autos you may have to shoot quite a bit of ammo to see what gives you the best groups at the range. All guns shoot different One of my mod 10/22's likes CCI Green tag target ammo and the other likes Wolf target ammo.
