I was wondering what ammo had good stopping power that was not +P . I understand that my 1968 model 36 snubbie was not designed for +P ammo. This is not for range shooting but SD.
Thanks
Wilbur

I think Federal still makes their Personal Defense 129 Grn hollowpoint in non-PlusP. I've had some for years and carry it in my 4 screw M12.

I'd suggest a 158 gr lead SWC, standard or hollowpoint, and lots of practice. It will print closer to the sights than lighter loads.

Remington R38S6 is a standard pressure load w/SWC 158 grain bullets, although I don't think +P in reasonable numbers will hurt your gun, assuming it is in good working condition.

If you want to go with standard pressure:

148gr Federal Gold Match Wadcutter
125gr Federal Nyclad Hollow Point
110gr Remington Semi-Jacket Hollow Point
110gr Winchester Silvertip Hollow Point

Try them all and use the one that you shoot best in your gun.

For my model 36 no dash, I use 125gr Federal Nyclad Hollow Point, from what info I have found I think they offer the best combination of penetration and expansion from the short barrel.

Wanted to let you know I frequently read replys about +Ps in older guns. I have a 36-no dash I purchased new. So I emailed S&W about using +Ps. My reply came back in all capital letters. NO! DON"T PUT PLUS Ps IN YOUR REVOLVER.

Back when I reloaded a lot, I took standard 148 grain lead hollow based wad cutters and seated them upside down and had really good results with them. They were loaded with 2.7 grains of Bullseye and grouped well.

No first hand experience in shooting situations, but I had several officers that carried them off duty.

I use the Remington 158 grain lead in all my 38's. It is an accurate load with good power and great controllability. I am confident it will perform as needed.

Are you referring to the LSWCHP "FBI" load? That's same round I use in CC .38's, even the ones rated for +P. For practice it's handloaded 158gr LSWC using standard .38 special data. Shot placement trumps everything else IMHO.

No I'm using just the regular UMC version "L38s5". It's just a lead round nose load. I'll have to try your load it sounds interesting. The L38s5 shoots to point of aim in my fixed sight smiths.

I have a pre 36 snub nose and I bought it from a gunsmith and he told me that I should shoot practice with 158 grain SWC and if I wanted to carry +p I could shoot a few to see where it prints but not to shoot a lot of +P in it. He works on lots of S&W revolvers and so I follow his advice.

Go ahead a load up with 38 +P. Shoot a few to familiarize yourself, and don't worry about it.

What is the differance between a M36 no dash and a
Model 36 spl, or is there one.

M36 is an abbreviation of model 36, so if the discussion is only about S & W revolvers they are the same. If someone wrote "Model 36 spl" they probably left out the ".38", referring to the caliber. The no-dash model 36 was built from the 1950s into the 1980s; later and different versions would have had a -1, 2, 3, etc. as part of the model number.
