A range owner I know says since Covid appeared, there has been a decline in the quality of ammo especially in the 9MM and 556/223. This is all factory ammo, not reloads. The problems he is seeing with increasing frequency are squibs and rounds that won't chamber along with live rounds stuck in chamber. This adds up $$$ especially with the cost of ammo.

Well, we've seen recalls from both Winchester (includes Browning and Herter's), and Ruag (Geco and Norma) in 9mm. That suggests some missed QC as they rush to push stuff out. And with a lot of the commonly used brands scarce and expensive, people are using anything they can find, including a lot of off-brands and remans.

On the bright side, I've been running a lot of Tula and other steel-cased brands, and have been pleasantly surprised. One bad primer on 9mm, the rest have gone bang and have been consistent. No problems at all with 223 or x39, or 45acp either.

There have been occasional QC issues off and on for years with various calibers that I have seen. Recalls sometimes, complaints about high misfire rates (especially with 22 rim fire). Used to run into visibly defective rounds too, especially when our shop was heavy into ammo sales on the gun show circuit. Way too often would open a box and find something wrong (not good when you are trying to show a potential customer something).

As demand has risen even higher I suspect more items are slipping through overworked Quality Control departments. Especially in the high demand/high volume calibers. Not good for business or for the customer who buys the ammo. With all the current anti gun hysteria many people are still trying to stock up and it would really suck to have unreliable ammo put back as your main stash for emergencies. And with current high prices many do not practice enough to really determine just how good the quality of what they have bought is

Or that his pistol needs a new recoil spring, or he needs to check his
firing pin to see if it is in with in specks.

I always give the under dog a shot at it ,,,,,,,,,,,,
