Ammo Prices --- Current Status in Your Area

There is plenty of rifle ammunition (30-30, .30-06, .270, etc., etc.) at the inflated prices that they have already been charging for "premium" ammunition. .308 and .223 in FMJ and "surplus" types (non-hunting) have been in short supply, and high in price.

Pistol ammunition in jam-a-matic calibers seems to be in good supply everywhere at $29.99 a box and up for ball and self-protection fodder.
However, I can't find a box of 10mm anywhere. Not that I need it though.

.32 ACP,.380, .38 Special, .357 magnum, .44 Special, .44 Magnum and .45 Colt are in short supply, and very high priced in my area.

I have seen plenty of .25 Auto, .218 Bee, .25-20 Winchester and .32 Winchester Special at old prices.:D Even .416 Remington Magnum and .340 Weatherby!

no suppliers here in my area except wallys. they haven't had any handgun ammo for a while. have 22s fairly often and not price gouging. i reload everything but rimfire, so i don't much care, but for most is a real problem. don't think this is going to get sorted out for some time yet. too many people bought guns for which there was no ammo to speak of. all of those people still want ammo.

Just for the fun of raining on the parade..... :D

Walmart has been a pillar of stability in this ammo mess. Say what you want about them, they're getting ammo on a regular basis, and they're selling it at the same prices before the madness began. I have a lot of things to dislike about Walmart, most relate to their customer base. All else being equal, everyone else is evil and Walmart is the knight in shining armor. If you don't like the fact they won't hold ammo for little ole you, T S.

Smaller gun shops have had a problem for a lot longer than this little ammo crunch. Only the bigger guys have the economic punch to hammer the middlemen. Small guys have to catch as catch can. And thats the pleasant side of it. Basically, the distributors sell to their best customers. The tiny shops don't usually meet that definition. So where are they to get ammo? They get price sheets, regardless of availability. Guess what, it has price breaks, usually. If they buy a case, they get a small discount, 10 or 15 cases, a slightly better price.

But if their wifey is a Walmart shopper, they stop by the ammo counter, just like you or I. And they develop an attitude. They can buy ammo for less than they could ever hope from their distributor. And they can toss it in their shopping cart, roll it out to the parking lot, and skip the haz-mat fee on shipping. Better still, they never have the problem of something being out of stock and not knowing it till a week or two later. Or the reverse, if its back ordered, they can ask their wife (nicely) to pick up a couple of boxes when she goes walmart shopping. This didn't start with the ill fated election. Its been going on for a decade or more. Only lately have our folks started to notice. Yes, 300% is a bit high, but I'm not sure its uncalled for.

Back when gasoline was $4+ a gallon, we all complained. The alternative was $2 a gallon gas, with everyone out of stock. Sounds familiar, doesn't it? So you have your choice. They price ammo, or force through price controls cheap ammo, and no one will have any. Or they let the price float upward to whatever equalbrium dictates. If you want ammo, you can buy some. At least if you've got the money. If not, you go without.

I was in the local (Inverness) W-W earlier this week, ammunition is kept under the counter, the handgun area was empty, A few isolated boxes of rifle ammunition a couple of boxes of CCI .22lr is all that they had in stock.
The largest local gun shop had nearly empty shelves; He had a small table with a few zip-lock bags of ammo. I looked a bag of 20 rds, mixed .45acp, part H&G 68-200gr reloads ,some hard ball, some GOK, the price for this lot $12.50.
I would say the problem has not gone away here yet.

Powder Valley says they have over 50 Million Primers on backorder.

I agree with Dick Burg W-W is a great stabilizer of prices. If it were not for the ridiculous Florida gas price laws they would tend to stabilize gasoline prices as well.
The local gun shop can mark his stuff up as high as he wants. I don’t care if he buys at W-W moves it a few miles and marks it to whatever and tries to sell it to me. Gander Mountain gets it low and sells it high, again more power to them. At least at present I have a lot of choices, if I don’t want to pay the price I will just pass on to the next guy.
Places like W-W and Powder Valley who maintain price stability sell out quickly but have my support. I only wish W-W stocked reloading components

Powder Valley says they have over 50 Million Primers on backorder.

That is 10,000 cases.

Or, 50K bricks.

If memory serves me, there are either 250 or 400 cases on a pallet.

That means that the total quantity of primers that they have on order is somewhere between 25 and 40 pallets. Roughly, a truckload or two, depending on trailer length and how many cases on a pallet.

I'm glad I could help to put a "visual" on that...50 million isn't a number I can visualize. 40 pallets, I can. :)

What gets me, the guys at the gun show this past weekend were selling the Russian primers for $22 per thousand.
I paid $15 per thousand last spring and bought a bunch of them and they work great- quite glad I did.

I wish I could get Russian primers for $22 per thousand.

We are still hit or miss here. WW gets some and the common stuff is gone in hours. The local gun shop is doing a good job of keeping prices as low as he can. He is paying more for what little he can get and is charging a bit more for it. He is not gouging though. Just making his fair profit.

Last week I just received some of those Russian primers, but they were $23 per 1,000+Haz Mat and shipping. I just happened to look at Widener's website and they had some in Large Pistol.
Today I got an email from Ammoman.com they have some Prvi Partizan 38Spl 158 LRN 500rds@$119-1,000rds@$219 shipped.

My suggestion just do a check of various websites or sign up for their emal notifications.

agree with mr. burg. simply supply and demand at work right now. if the primer situation doesn't straighten out in the next few months, you will see a lot of foreign made stuff available. the rest of the world knows what has happened and will cash in if they can. i would expect the feds figure out some way to keep the import stuff out if they can. the antis absolutely hate the idea that someone can make ammo at his home and no one knows about it. i still think before it is over, there will be some new law or ruling concerning any bullets containing lead, especially cast ones. look at governator land now.

In both Victoria TX and Corpus Christi TX, ammo remains mostly non-existent in Wal-Mart and Academy.

Looked at a gun shop in Corpus that I really dislike for some .38 Super. I think it was 36 bucks for a box of 50 American Eagle. Passed on that, but found Fiocchi .38 Super at 18 bucks for box of 50 at Double D Gun Shop here in Victoria. I don't know anything about Fiocchi, but I just need to get rounds through that gun so I can take it apart.

Someone on this forumn provided a link to a couple of interesting handguns at Texas Gun Trader or something like that. I really wish he hadn't done that. I followed the links to the ammo for sale section, and it really makes me ill to see what some folks are selling ammo for. It shouldn't mean anything to me, and I almost never give a damn who does what, but for some really strange reason I find it to be insulting. Insulting in the same way as if someone thinks they are smarter than me.

I bought 3 boxes of .38 Super last weekend, leaving quite a lot on the shelf. That's all I've bought these last 18 months. I'm not going to get caught up in any of this.

6-12-09' (16:30 PDT) Wally World 30 miles N. of Seattle.
ONLY pistol stuff on the shelf .40 S&W (W/W/B)- 14, 50 round boxes @ $12.97 per.
Near zero long gun. Lot's of field/trap/Turkey 12 gauge shotshell stuff.

.38 is impossible to find, I did find some cowboy target loads for 26.99 per 50ct. .357 is about the same to find but what little I saw was going for nearly $0.85 a round. 7.62x54r is hard to find locally but ranges anywhere from $7.99 per 20 for surplus up to nearly $30 for 20 Norma rounds. .22 LR is reasonable still just got a 400ct box for my new toy for 24.99. Looks like I am only going to the range with the Mosin and the .22 for awhile.:(

I have a fair amount of once-fired .30-30 brass that I picked at various ranges over the years, right around hunting season when folks make their once-a-year trip to the range to sight in ol' betsy. I always thought that one day I would wind up with a .30-30, but it hasn't happened yet. Maybe if I could sell the brass at $20/20, I could buy one!

Except for shotgun shells the supply is pretty thin at the local Wallyworld.
Dunham;s Sports has more ammo but prices are generally a bit higher.
Independent gun stores have ammo, prices are about the same as Dunhams.
CCI .22 is what is mostly available locally and the higher velocity stuff rather than standard velocity.

I was at a local convenience store (it sells alcohol, tobacco and firearms) just after an ammo order arrived. It was mostly shotgun shells with some .357 Blazer, .40 S&W and some PMC .223. The .223 was going to be marked $8.95 per 20.
"I remember when these were $3 a box," the dealer said.
"I should have bought a bunch back then," sez I.

Supply still pretty bad in S. Fla. Hitting a Gun Show next weekend to locate 38 target rounds

Cabela's online has Magtech 38 SPCL 158 GR LRN in stock as of this post, for $16.99 plus shipping. I've found it cheaper and easier to pay shipping costs than to pay for gas driving around all day and still going home empty handed. I've ordered from Cabela's quite a few times, and never had a problem.
