I've got about 1500 rnds of 9mm or 500 rounds per pistol. I'm going to add more. Do you store ammo based on how many firearms of a specific caliber you have or how many rounds you fire a year or do you just keep hoarding?

I buy based on how much I shoot a certain caliber. I at least have a few hundred rounds for every caliber though. I even have quite a bit for the 460, that includes 45 Colt and 454 Casull though.

I primarily shoot a 9mm Beretta and a S&W 686. I usually by a box or two of 9mm and 357 each paycheck. I've kind of slowed down on my shooting while I build up to 1000 rounds of each. Once I hit 1000 I'll start shooting again every time I buy new stuff, rotating the old stuff out first. I try not to be too paranoid, but don't want to be left without just in case.

Well really more by how much I can afford.
It seems to me it would be a good idea to stock up on .22 ammo now before it becomes more expensive. 100,000 seems like a decent amount without going overboard.

For shtf I have less then 5000 each of
223/556
30-06
40 S&W

I think in a shtf scenario a few hundred ceterfire rounds would be plenty. I mean what's the point, how many fire fights are you going to win?

I used to not have more than one full box (of say 50) and maybe half of a second box for each caliber I shoot. I just bought as needed basically. Now of course, when I find it I buy it and I'm starting to hoard.

I like to reload and by doing that you can have a bunch of ammo on hand. Keeping all the brass and power along with the bullets you can keep 5 to 10M rounds on hand. I shoot 22, 32, 38, and 9mm the most.

There's no such thing as....
Too much love,
too much money
or too much ammo.

If you don't agree, I'll change it back.

Grayfox,
That reminds me of a Tom T. Hall song...

There was an old-time cowboy
Don't you understand...
His eyes were sharp as razorblades,
His face was leather-tan.
His toes were pointed inward from a hanging on a horse,
He was an old philosopher of course...

At the advice of the fine people on this forum, I started collecting ammo and got in the habit of buying a box of each kind that I used everytime I went to a place that sold it. I still buy what I use when I find it at a decent price. Last month I started a post when I realized that the current market value of my ammo had outstripped the cost of my guns.

Please pardon this question from a future reloader, but are .22LR's reloadable, or did you just include them as a caliber you like to shoot?

An old sargent told the green privates...There's only two times that you have too much ammunition.....If you are on fire or drowning.....

Rimfire cartridges are not reloadable.

My ammo is stored in the safe. I might have to get a second safe because of that.

I'm not sure. I have some usable ammo for every gun I own, including the antiques but the problem I have answering your question is that I have the most guns in the claibers I shoot the most so that is also where I have the most ammo. Which came first, the chicken or the egg?

I kind of figure it ain't anybodies business how or why or what kind of ammo I keep "In Stock". Same goes for my guns. Kind of makes this a pretty stupid Thread in my opinion. But go ahead it'll make it just that easier to find when the time comes!!!

To second a previous post, having "too much" ammo is akin to what pilots say about having "too much fuel" in their plane . . . the only time it's a problem is when you're on fire . . . .

Get one of those JOBOX boxes, add 600lbs. of lead in bottom, store ammo on top of that- it will not be moved!
