AMMO!!

Perhaps because they have a team of engineers and ballisticians doing their load work up and don't need to rely on imperfect rules of thumb?

Generally the minimum load published in a manual will be one with relatively consistent velocity, no chance of squibs in a variety of barrels, and not toooo dirty. This may be more than 10% below starting, or less.

Do you understand now?

/Rule of thumb: If you start a post with "I don't understand why" let it serve as a hint that you may not be well qualified to give advice on the topic.

UhOh the boys are about to enter the P Zone. Break out the Rain Gear and Umbrellas

After a bunch of reading, asking, buying, working, trimming, measuring, etc.....

(With a LOT of help) I made my first box of ammo tonight! :D :D

I loaded a box of (50) .357 Mag Hornady 158Gr. XTP tonight.
I chose a mid-range powder charge of 13.5Gr. of Win. 296.

My loading manual says a range of 12.4 - 16.0, so I went with a mid-range to start.

I haven't shot any yet to see how they perform, but I plan to tomorrow.

I think I've found a new obsession. :D :D :D :D

If they shoot as good as they look, your in business.

I'm already saving money. ;)

I was just gonna burn the money I used on the reloading stuff, so I'm already ahead of the game. :D

I figured the math, and I loaded that box of .357 for about 1/3 the cost of buying the same stuff in the store.

Won't be long before your bitch'n about not finding your favorite powder or the price of primers. Then someone will accuse you of going to the range just to make brass. At the range you won't be able to walk past a piece of brass without picking it up...It just doesn't stop!!![/QUOTE

In time you will find a favorite brass and learn to read surplus brass headstamps. There are some match brass that is highly sought after. When you find something your gun and you like, buy in bulk. You gotta love good cheap lead loads. I can make .38 specials that cost less than .22lr!

Congratulations they look great.

For me making up and developing rifle rounds is the most fun.
The pinnacle of that is when your custom ammo is more precise than the shooter.
Can't wait to see what you can get the 06 to do.

and what are you still doing here ?.....go test them

Well, I helped Hillbilly with his first 50 last night.

I did note and advise that 296/110 like to be loaded stout.

However, being his first reloads of his own it was my recommendation to use a pinch of caution in keeping safely below max charges yet a bit above listed starting charge. I didn't think it prudent to go right to max or close to it, but given powder like 296 can be sketchy when reduced too much he decided for himself after my input to load at the level he did.

And not to split hairs here and in no way intending disrespect, I know of at least one case Hornady exceeds Hodgdons specs for powder charge. With 460 S&W and a 240gr XTP Mag, Hornady calls for a max charge of 49.5gr, while Hodgdon stops at 48.5. I found out my particular weapon doesn't even like 48gr even.

Again, no disrespect intended here.. just yet another example of conflicting data from different sources for the same load. And this plays a part in how I work up... Given my sticky extraction issues at 48gr, I'm glad I didn't push up to 49.5.

I'm sure Mr. Hillbilly will be stepping up his charge of 296 in due time.. ;)

Who the heck do you think you are talking to me in that manner? I'm 100% sure you would not do that face to face, you seem very mouthy from behind the safety of your computer screen. There are very brave people out there hiding behind fake names...

What in the world did I say that would cause you to talk to me that way? My advice was only meant to insure a new reloader stays safe. Advice is worth what you pay for it but being so disrespectful shows a character flaw that is ugly.

Says the person hiding behind a fake name? Using language a good bit more foul than I did?

Your advice implied that Hornady's load data, with a starting load more than 10% below max, was therefore wrong.

That's an assumption that's flat out wrong - I'm pointing that out. Sorry if I was a bit too snarky for your taste, but what I wrote is accurate. If you don't like that, them ignore it. You're free to live in your veil of ignorance.

Still being nasty I see... Keep calling names and getting personal. So who are you really? Someone who has had words with me before and you came back under a different name just to be nasty? You just keep talking so everyone here can see your character flaws.

BTW, that one word was changed before I saw your reply because I thought better of it. I figured there's no need to act like you...

You can continue talking like you are but I won't be answering. This thread has been sidetracked enough already. I only mentioned the 20% below starting charge because I was trying to keep a new reloader safe, nothing more, nothing less...

When I got started reloading I got more bad advice then I care to share from folks who had been reloading without incident (somehow) for longer than I had been alive.

The manuals are written by folks who have access to equipment and a knowledge base that I envy. Telling a new reloader that a manual is wrong is (to me) on the wrong end of keeping a new reloader safe.

But at least we're both pissed for the same reason.

...stuff...

If I had only posted 150 times on an Internet Forum, I would show a bit of deference to someone with over 4,000 posts.

That being said (written), maybe both of you should try going outside and enjoying the nice weather we're having. I mean that, in the most positive way I can muster. It's just an Internet Forum, after all.
