Ammunition Shortage will continue

I for one am getting sick of this "ammo shortage". I have a fair supply of 9mm - 45 auto, but this is really getting old. I wish I had more .38's though, and 357's.

I am thinking of taking up reloading again on a small scale. One of my buddys reloads alot, but he is having a hard time getting componants.

Starting to shoot my .22's more, but they are getting hard to come by as well.

Best

Winchester Ammo (Olin Corp) in Illinois is running 24/7 with 1,000 employees. I have personally tripled my ammo orders the past 4 months just because of the hype. The more you can't get...the more you want!

In addition, there are many "first time gun buyers" the past 6 months. Once these new owners become comfortable with their new guns...they will buy more guns then ammo!!

Probably why Ruger and S&W are at "full capacity" production for the balance of the year...still waiting on my new M&P15 for 10 weeks!!

This is exactly why there is a ammo "shortage". Someone posts that there is going to be a shortage and BAM people run out and buy up all they can get and guess what? YOU CREATE A SHORTAGE! Stop the madness!!!

One more post.. I don't have any problems getting ammo from a small gunstore locally. There isn't any ammo to be found at Wal-Mart or Bass Pro but who cares. I can get good defensive rounds (practice rounds too) at a good price just about anytime I want. The only time I can't is when he is closed. So really where is the shortage?

These kind of feeding frenzies occur in the economy from time to time with aberrations in demand but they're economically unsustainable. We seen it recently with gas and housing. In the past there have been ammo and ammo related "shortages" at the start of every Democratic presidency since Carter.

The ammunition companies are making ammo and money as fast as they can. Soon all the fools that think they need to stock up will be satiated or run out of money and the stock of ammo for sale will increase, with that the prices will drop again.

When factories are running at capacity and prices are high, manufacturers in any industry have a big incentive to expand to meet the demand. I do not believe ammunition producers are an exception.

Also, I do not see an ammunition shortage in my area! I do see a shortage of ammunition at prices that people want to pay. There is virtually no cheap ammo anymore, but plenty of ammo at high prices. However, the same cannot be said of components.

Smokester consider yourself lucky if you don't see a shortage where you live.In Michigan I looked last night for 9mm;38 spec and the only thing I could find was some Hornady for the nine @ $50 a box.As far as target ammo they have advertised sales; but by the time you get to the store it is gone.Around where I live the cheapest place to get ammo is Wally World and Gander Mt.The small shops can't compete.

Actually the shortage started when Hussein got elected, and it's exactly what those jackasses in D.C. need to see.

As far as prices dropping as soon as demand ammo demand drops, that may not happen to the extent we would like. Metal prices will go up at least some because the Chinese are buying copper, and I'll guess other metals, as an investment since they see the coming double digit inflation that the U.S. economy is about to experience. They no longer trust the dollar so they're buying metal instead.

+1 Those who didn't live through the "Carter years" are in for a rude awakening, and it isn't far off.

I hope everyone got a kick out of the last line in the Gunbroker article:

The long and short is that now is the time to buy ammunition.

What a joke!!!
Why should I buy ammunition during a high demand time and pay too much?!?! That goes against everything I was ever taught!

Doesn't anyone remember the old nursery rhyme of the grasshopper and the ant? I guess it isn't politically correct anymore to tell nursery rhymes.

For your enjoyment:
Walt Disney's 1934 classic, The Grasshopper and the Ants

The time to buy ammunition was when it was cheap, and available. Sheesh.

(Also, Disney hasn't made a good movie or cartoon since Walt died, IMHO.)

No ammo shortage at my house. I have been stocking up for years, and still find it cheaply. Bought full box of .243 100 grain Rem for $5.00 at fishing show, full box of .357 Win Silvertips for $8.00 at sporting show, both this year. Gun show prices are high, but lots of other places to find it, like the small sportsmen shows, auctions, etc.

I have been stocking ammunition for the last six months or so, and I certainly do not consider myself a "fool". Prudent, yes, but a "fool", no. Neither I nor anyone else contributing to this forum knows what will be the price/availability of ammunition in the future. I certainly hope availability increases with the consequent drop in prices. If such occurs, I am simply out a little money. Last year I paid about $2000 for home insurance, but am happy that such money was paid for no tangible result.

If one does not want to buy ammunition for whatever reason, he should not buy it: but he should not disparage those who do.

We are, as the Chinese curse states, "living in interesting times".

Actually the "shortages" at the big box stores started before President Obama was elected. After the election it really took off due to the fear and panic of gun or ammo bans. The more that is posted or reported the worse it will get. Take a look at one of the earlier posts "The more you can't get...the more you want!".

And actually the last thing that pro-gun control advocates need to see is panic buying. That just adds fuel to the fire and makes them go into panic mode.

I WANT them in "panic mode". When they're all relaxed and casual is when the colonoscopy starts! Now at least someone will be watching?
The bottom line is, we've been successful at turning this subject into the "real" third rail of politics. And without the help of ANY of the media, thank you very much.

Personally I thinks it's a temporary inconvenience brought on by wartime demands and panic over the new administration. Time will tell. I'm still buying all I can....just in case I'm wrong.

This weekend I went to the local outdoor range, which is at a State park. There was actually a waiting line to get on the rifle range, something I've never seen. Talking to the range officer after shooting I commented on how busy he was. He said he had checked the records and from 2007 to 2008 that range had experienced roughly a 50% increase in usage. So far in 2009 that range was averaging 80% more people per day than it had in 2008.

Hording and speculating aside if this is common nationwide that means over twice the ammo will be used in 2009 than was used in 2007 just in range time.

For the first time I'm actually shooting more center fire than rim fire in practice. I cannot find rim fire ammo and center fire is actually cheaper. When you can find 22LR it runs $40 per 1000. I have less than $20 per 1000 in my small pistol primers.
