An observation of Wolfe chili

Tried some Hardy Jack from Walmart. It was much better. Down side had beans! But I live alone so no biggie. Walmart was out of their brand? But they had hundreds of cans of Wolfe. Summer clearance?

While homemade chili is best, and most canned chili is horrible, I have to say the Carroll Shelby chili mix is the best store bought chili kit. It is pretty much homemade, just with his spice mix added to ground meat and your choice of other ingredients. Much like his cars, Shelby makes a damn good chili.

I concur.

We had a chili cook-off in my office (I won!)==just a half-dozen entries. Wanted to play "fair", so I went from scratch with dried beans, 12 different chili peppers, stew meat.

I usually use the Carroll Shelby's as a base. You can use large chunks of beef or pork (2" cubes) and no beans to make a dish called Chile colorado, a sort of beef stew. You can also use it to make Camarones a la Diablo (Devil's shrimp)using prawns and maybe some mushrooms.

Of course, the Shelby's is a starter and these get "modified slightly" (!).

I perfer to make my own homemade chili but for canned chili the best so far I think is Stagg classic chili with beans.

I Was just looking online at the Carroll Shelby chili mix.
The same company also makes a Wick Fowler mix.
Last year, When they had that recall both were recalled.
Probably means both are made in the same facility and probably the same production line.
Anybody ever try the Wick Fowler?

Carroll Shelby had a ranch about 50 miles east of me. When he passed away he had a nice loaded out jeep that sat a few years. A friend of mine purchased it last year & I got to tune it up & do the carburetor. It had the silver-gray color. No chili stains on the upholstery though. Someone offered him way too much money & he cut it loose.

Are we talking Terlingua or somewhere else?

There is no such thing as a good canned chili. I don't know what it tastes like before it goes in the can but I know what it tastes like when it comes out. I'm gagging here just to think about it. If you HAVE to resort to canned chili I'd go with Hormel (no beans)

Sometimes when we have chili dogs we use it that way. I normally try to time the chili dog meal for when I've made a pot of my nearly world famous Walkin' Jack's 3-day chili. But when the grand kid pop over uninvited and unannounced we have to do the best we can....

Beans and chili go together like Napoleon Brandy and Pepsi. Bleech!!!

I wouldn't know about that. I don't drink Napoleon brandy or Pepsi. But I do know how good mrs. mstems chili taste. No one that I know of that has ate it ever complained. Just about all ask for seconds.

I have not eaten canned chili, canned pasta, potted meat, Vienna sausage, Spam, those 3 lb. canned hams since 1968.

Chili with beans is a meal as long as it is severed with hot corn bread. Chili without beans has to have chunks of meat and severed with corn bread. The red sauce is the heart of the chili.

I used to know a gal who drank Dr. Pepper and Scotch.
The best feature of that concoction is nobody will pick it up and drink it.

A hunting buddy drinks Tequila and Ginger Ale. Got him to try straight Tequila on an elk trip==don't know if he switched or not.

From my experiences as a kid with Wolf Brand Chili, I always got a mouthful of pencil eraser sized, rubber balls....YUCK! That being said, I've tried their turkey chili and it's pretty good and no foreign objects...still sounds gross don't it :).

Remember now I didn't say it was GOOD. I said it was the best of the canned chili.

Small can

Small bites until you see what yer a dealin' with.

And here is a little clue. If you don't like it then just toss it. Under no circumstances do you want to give even a small bite to Shasta. Trust me on this. :D

Usually when I eat can chili--I "cut" it with a scoop of Mayo--since my tummy will revolt on me for eating it. Shasta loves licking anything she can get off the lids. Spaghettios, soups, chili-lid licking are her favorites. So far no health probs and no accidents.:D However,I dont give her any scoops full of the stuff, she would probably not eat it. I cant get her to even eat the real deli stuff--meats.On occasion--whe will eat a tiny piece.

Ill make sure she doesnt get more than a lick. I think she just likes getting a different taste on her tongue--from the diet cat food she has to eat.

Had an old cop buddy back in the '70's who found a tip of a pigs ear in his "all beef" Wolf brand (or Wolf Man) chili. Put the ear tip in an envelope and mailed to Wolf Brand along with a letter containing a few "choice" words. He later received a letter back containing coupon for free cans of chili.
