Ran into a “3903” today at one of my LGS and had to make a thread about it for all of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd gen lovers out there.

It’s marked 3904 and Gwinnett County (Georgia) PD. It has not been refinished and it’s not your typical blued/carbon finish. It’s actually just like a 3913, with stainless slide and satin frame. Fixed night sights are long dead, and it has some edge wear consistent with a duty gun. No abuse though, the decocker operates properly, frame is ok, and the bore is shiny.

After some research I see this special order gun referenced in a few forum threads but not a lot of info or even pictures are available. The store has it priced at $500. There can’t be more than a small run or two out there of these but even with the rarish finish combination, I just couldn’t bring myself to pay the asking price. Cool gun though!

Does anyone have one of these Gwinnett PD “3903”s and have a picture to share of it? Any takers on value?

Thanks in advance

I remember some discussion about that particular combination several years ago. I had contacted a forum member that owned one but he no longer had the pistol or any pictures of it.

Pretty much any 3rd gen pistol in decent condition is worth $500 out the door. If it is unique or in great condition or both add value as well as number of magazines or box. If you arent interested PM me the details - I have a unique 2 tone 3904 with Stainless slide which I believe tracks back to SW.

Gwinnett County issued numerous 5903 which is 5906 slide on a silver alloy frame. The slide had Novak style fixed sights. I always preferred the alloy frame 5904/5903 to the 5905/5906.

The 3903 would be desirable to me but I’ve never seen one in person. The 3904 were pretty rare in my area but a Friend had a 908 and a 909 and both shot good.

Not entirely sure if this is the pistol you were looking at. Mine is marked 3904 and Gwinnett County S.D. I paid around $225 around five years ago.

Well that’s a Gwinnett County 3904 but it’s in the standard 3904 finish. The one I’m looking at is the same finish as a 3913/4013 etc except it’s model marked 3904.

I’ll probably go back tomorrow and scoop it up just for the hell of it :)

I would check it closely to make sure that it not a parts gun. 3906/5906 slide on a refinished 3904 receiver or a 3904 that someone had hard chromed.

Although I think a 3903 would have been a popular item, S&W evidently did not think the same. I am unaware of any production run of a 3903, only 3904 (blued steel/black anodized aluminum receiver) and 3906 (all stainless) models. That's not to say that S&W did not make a few as a test or for a special order, but if that is the case, it would make a genuine, factory produced "3903" a truly rare item.
