Here's another "Wallace Wallington" type that I had read a brief write-up about a while ago:

"Coral Castle doesn't look much like a castle, but that hasn't discouraged generations of tourists from wanting to see it. That's because it was built by one man, Ed Leedskalnin, a Latvian immigrant who single-handedly and mysteriously excavated, carved, and erected over 2.2 million pounds of coral rock to build this place, even though he stood only five feet tall and weighed a mere 100 pounds."

Coral Castle is the best tourist site in Florida (well, okay, maybe not as good as Weeki Wachee) . When I visited there in the early '70s you were able to see where Edward quarried his coral blocks, see the tool marks he left, then see the pry bars, block & tackle and other simple (but effective) leverage devices that he used. The whole thing has inspired me whenever landscaping and other domestic tasks come up... "Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it, and I shall move the world." Archimedes

The History Channel is doing way too much conjecture and not enough history lately.

When half the show consists of the somber announcer asking questions like, "Is it possible that XXXXXX were brought here by xxxxxx?" (You fill in the blanks.)

I always yell at the TV, "I guess so... and it's also possible that monkeys flew out of your butt!"
