Ankle Holster suggestions, please.

My ankle holster suggestion: Forget it. Buy your son a kilt and have him put the gun under his "skirt". IMO ankle holsters are for people who will never want or need to deploy the gun quickly.

There are only two Ankle rigs I would even look at, unless going with an Alessi.

1) Renegade
2) Galco Ankle Glove

Ankle Holsters work good for a secondary weapon when sitting down, or on your back getting the back of your head pounded in to the pavement.

Say What You Want....

... but I ankle carry in warm weather. Sometimes even as a primary and I have gotten good service from the Uncle Mike's velco model for many years.

There are times when not much else will do. For those times, considering the slowness of the draw, one must be extra vigilant and aware.

I CCW a 640-1 Centennial Magnum and light trousers for pocket carry just don't cut it with this heavy a gun.

When the weather turns cold and there is slush, snow and other crap at ground level I switch to a vest and OWB carry, usually with a larger gun.

Currently carry a S & W 442-1 in a Don Hume 760 given to me by my unbelievably great brother for my birthday. Carry the airweight Smith in it 10 to 12 hours a day and sometimes forget its there. Hugs the ankle great, stays in place, no problem walking or moving in any direction, doesn't imprint and can get my revolver into play relatrively quickly. Great holster but a little pricy. But all well made equipment is.

I use and highly recommend the Fobus ankle holster.Light, durable and keeps the weapon very secure until drawn, also one of the best priced.I'ved tried others and the fobus,IMO,can't be beat for the money.Only draw back is that it WILL wear terribly on blued finishes.

There is an Alessi ankle holster in what looks like great condition for $65 currently listed in the "Classified, for sale" forum. A very good price compared to a new one.

If you carry a gun thinking you will be held up at gunpoint at anytime, then yeah, an ankle rig isn't for you..but I am much more concerned with just having it on me and the comfort and conceal-ability ankle affords me far outweighs the worry of a slower draw. At this very moment I am off to the park with my kids...having it on my ankle keeps it out of the way while I play with them and much less chance of anyone spotting it under a t-shirt with all horseplay. If some nutjob with a machete enters the park, I'm pretty sure I'll be able to get to it in time...

I received a nylon ankle holster a few years ago

as a gift from an acquaintance. I wear tucked BDUS at work daily so I really can't wear it work; the few times I've tried it in civvies I have determined for me that an ankle holster won't work. Gluing some velcro on the back of a small holster and the opposing velcro inside the Roper boots I wear when riding my motorcycle is a better idea...for me.

I just don't find an ankle holster as a solution for me; my usual carry is a strong side OWB holster, followed by a shoulder holster, or an IWB. I have several guns that I do/can pocket carry; including a Walther TPH, PPK, Sig P238, NAA WASP, 2 Colt .25 autos, a Colt .380 auto, uh gee I guess my addiction runs deep!

+1 I also experienced the pant cuff riding up and exposing the holster/gun when sitting, or stooping. Gave up the ankle holster for a pocket holster.

Well said Sip! Ankle holsters aren't for everyone, it works for me very much for the reasons you noted. For the life of me I can't see why anyone would attempt to carry a J frame in a pocket holster...I've tried it and it was one of the most annoying experiences simply due to my normal dress.

Reading this thread brings out another pet peeve of mine, the quality of the holster is everything. I see it far too often where someone goes out and spends more than a grand on the latest/greatest arm of the week and they go to the bargain holster table at the gun show, they spend no more than $10 for the holster to carry their pistol then wonder why it doesn't work. Ankle holsters are the same as IWB, OWB, pocket, etc. If you are going to buy cheap holsters chances are it won't work for you.

I wear an ankle holster with a J Frame or M&P40c just about every day, it works for me but it may not work for you. Bottom line is find something that works for you and stick with it.

Cheers,
Sam
