I'g like to buy an external hard drive and do a backup and mirror image from two different computers. Is this possible on one drive with sufficient memory?

That will depend on the software you are using and he settings available. For a disk clone type operation you will likely need to partition the drive first otherwise day backup may overwrite the other.
If you are simply copying a bunch of files or using a file sync such as FileZilla then you may still want to partition but it would not be as important. Or you could use software such as CrashPlan which will keep multiple versions. It really depends on whether you are trying to back up only files for later restore or an image copy to do a full bare metal restore of the full operating system etc n

I've found some inexpensive hard drives on eBay. Two drives is probably the way to go.

There are two ways of doing this firstly just download all your pics, docs, music etc. onto an external hard drive for this you only need one for any number of computers until it's full. The second way is to get an external hard drive that AUTOMATICALLY backs up your computer this way you need one for each computer.

You can also use a Network Attached Storage solution, with 1 drive to backup both systems. Assuming you have some type of network setup. Then the backup jobs can be automated, and only need 1 piece of storage hardware.

This is good advice and there's also the CLOUD :)

Five Terabyte jobs....

I could use on of those 5 TB external drives, but if I do more movies and uncompressed music files I'll need something else soon. Those files are humongous.

BE CAREFUL: It's a good idea to dismount the drives before shutting the computer down. I had some power problems that kept turning the power off my external hard drive cold dead and after a while that did it in. Couldn't recover a byte. Fortunately I had most backed of it up on CDs and DVDs.

I store my external drive in a fire safe after backing up my files once a month. Just in case. I'd especially hate to lose my photos.

Got the idea from work. In the old days we used to store the server backup tapes in a fire safe after changing them out in the tape drive every morning.

Hitachi and Western Digital drives appear to last longer on average than do those by Seagate/Maxtor.

If imaging two systems onto a single portable drive it would be best to use separate partitions.
