Another Highway Patrolman to the pile, a 28-1

If,,, I decide to part with it (don't hold your breath), our friend Drew has first shot at it.

Thanks Mick! How many grandkids you wanna trade for it? I've got a few to spare... :) I'll throw in an old goat from CT who whittles up some pretty fair S&W stocks and repairs from time to time!

Seriously, I hope you keep it, but if you don't let me know and we can work something out...

Drew

BTW, I have a 6" Highway Patrolman that is within 200 or so frame serials (higher) of Mick's gun and it has a Mod.28 stamp with what looks like a -2 second stamp. it has the "L" and "H" stamps on the rear fo the cylinder, but instead of being between adjacent charging holes, the stamps are between opposing charging holes. The ejector rod head is under cut. I wrote it up and photographed it years ago when I though that it was 'supposed' to be a -1.

Drew is that one a 3 or 4 screw ?

The interesting thing about the 28-2 with the serial number in the S222000 range is per Roy's book, the change to the 3-screw frame took place at serial number S227149, but as we all say, nothing is impossible with S&W! Apparently, the 28-2 was ahead of its time so to speak and is unique in its own right.

I have a 6" 28-2 SN S223094.

Drew, I've got plenty of room for grand kids and oddly enough a spot for a 6" HP.
To the chagrin of some here, I took the 28-1 to the range this morning (yes, I did actually shoot it). "Wonderful" does not begin to describe it. 6 12 gauge hulls were sent into the tumbleweeds with 6 shots at 19 paces (odd number yes, but that's what it was). The trigger on he 28 no dash is much better (it has a target trigger and has been molested) but it is better than the 1955 vintage 5 screw (that gun has maybe 100 rounds through it, yes, I did all of them after cleaning the cosmoline out). I shot it because I told the previous owner it would be taken to the desert and used as it was made to be. I am humbled by the whole thing.

Mick
Just for grins, have you thought about asking the seller if he knew? I know you said you felt that he did ... but wouldn't you like to know for sure?

Just checked my e-mail (thanks for the reminder). I am pretty humbled right now.

"Mickey,

I am delighted that you are enjoying the revolver. I wanted it to go to someone who would appreciate it. You have my best wishes for you and your family. Be well, be happy and be safe.

-Lyman

yup, he knew

The story behind it,,,

Please keep us posted about the details with the previous owner. I know you've asked him the history behind it, how he came by it and how long he had it. Now you've got to find the original box for that bad boy! With your luck that should be easy!

No, I'm looking for a 4",,, think I should post something in the WTB column?

Well, I do have a 4" 28-2 you might be able to swap me out of....with Drews permission of course!:D:D:D:D:D

got a 4" -2, S293567
4" 5 screw, S121394
4" 28 4 screw, S202821
6" 28-3, N957711 (got it NIB from my dear wife maybe 7 years ago) with a sticker with a date of 8/14/83 on the box and "Anderson". Always figured it was a date and a name
The -3 is the one that started me on HPs and the very first I had. I want that one to go in the box with me.
