I received a set of very used stock wood grips in a batch marked "J-frames" that looks to take a smaller diameter screw than the others. Could this be an I-frame grip?

The serial number might help you determine that.
I have a pair of the longer J frame grips with the small screw in the 403,000's. I have not really studied it enough to give a definative answer, but my best guess is mid to late 60's is where the small screw will show up. The ones I have seen are always blue circle grips.

I've had to use 3 to 4 different size screwdriver tips to take grips off S&W's. On I Frame stocks, they are about a 1/4" shorter, but J frame's will fit an I frame otherwise. I recently tried a pair of J frame smooth wood grips on both a I Frame and J frame, and they were about an 1/8" short of covering the frame on the backstrap side. Tried them on my original Mod 40, and they fit. Didn't realize the stocks were slimmer to allow for the grip safety.

Sorry, no pics, camera's in the shop for repair.

Inside of one grip is clearly marked 'J' with the number 11-336. Checked the grips against another set of J's and they match up.

I think that the screw is just a smaller diameter.
