Another JB Weld Question

Now that all the Locktite and JB Weld experts are assembled, I have a problem and a question. I have a Lyman model 450 bullet sizer and lubricator. The bottom is uneven where it sits on the loading table and lube leaks out because of the uneven surface.

I am gonna try to make a JB Weld "gasket" by using wax paper between the loading table block, then JB weld, then more wax paper between the sizer and the JB Weld. I will then gently tighten the bolts to form fit the JB Weld, and hold the sizer in place while the JB Weld cures. When it is cured I will have a shim that is flat on one side and uneven like the bottom of the sizer on the other.

Do you guys think this will work?

I don't know if your project will work; but I do know from my amateur "smithing" days that JB Weld lives up to its name. That stuff is as permanent as anything and REALLY strong. Many times I shaped a gob of it with a file. So take it easy :)

It should work fine as it will be where the table top is uneven. Good luck with it. Jeff
 
I had a similar problem with my 450. i just placed a cardboard shim under the base of the lube reservoir stem. That stopped the leak. I'm concerned that your JB weld solution will prevent removal of the stem from the reservoir in the future should you need to do so.
 
I think your idea has merit. Won't cost much to try and find out. I also would recommend the regular JB Weld over the quick setting stuff. I have "fixed" some interesting things with JB Weld over the years. I don't see any reason that what you propose will not work as long as you don't squeeze it down to thinly! Let us know how it comes out!
 
I can't say if your idea will work or not - I'm not familiar with this particular piece of Lyman equipment.
But I can testify to the strength of JB Weld, and if you want to make it even stronger, embed some wire mesh like screen door screen in it.
 
The only time I tried using wax paper as a dam with JB Weld yielded mixed results. In a couple of places, it actually stuck to the wax paper and I ended up having to cut the paper off. May have been a fault of the paper, though it was a name brand, or it may be a testament to the sticking properties of the epoxy. I would experiment a bit first though to make sure it would release from whatever you are using.

Brownell's used to sell a release agent used with their Accuglass beding compound that worked great, but even if they still sell it (?) it wouldn't be cost effective for your intended use. As others have suggested, give Lyman a call and see if they don't offer a free solution. :)
 
I think the idea is worth trying. That said, the suggestion to use something firmer is worth considering too. Plumbers and or Marine epoxy would do the trick. It comes in a two part stick and is very moldable and manageable like clay.
 
You may want to build a dam around the base of the 450 because the JBWeld will flow out some as it cures. I have seen this happen in some applications where it was used to level out a surface or to fill in holes. As it cured it settled into the holes and the level as cured was below where it was when it was applied.

For my 450 i have used both a gasket made from a heavy cereal box as well as a circular gasket that was sized to just fit the circular area that is just outside of the opening for the plug. For the latter I used the plastic top from a coffee can.
 
I got a big ol' Chimenea about 20 years ago. Well, before I even used it I dropped it and it broke into three pieces. I put it back together again with JB Weld and it's still going strong! LOVE the stuff!!!!
 
I would try using a gasket cut from leather. Something not too thin so it has some ability to take up the uneven surface.
I would soak it in water first to soften it,
Then place betw the 2 surfaces and bolt the press down. Put a single layer of saran wrap betw the leather and the bench and the leather and the press. This'll keep the wet leather from sticking to either as it drys.

Gently tighten to compress the now softened leather into the uneven surface . Don't over do it, just enough to firmly imprint it.
Let it dry completely.

Then unbolt and separate the leather from betw the press and the bench. The saran wrap should make that easy and pull off.
Now you have a perfect formed leather gasket.

You can put back down as is or lightly apply a further dressing to the surfaces to help seal them and bolt the press with gasket back onto the bench.
It'll come apart easily if you need it to.

If you work with the epoxy to make a gasket,,coat the press, the mounting bolts, and the bench with soft auto paste wax for a release agent. Don't buff it off, just scrub it on (I use a toothbrush when I glass bed gun parts) and let it dry.

To avoid the epoxy squeezing out of your gasket and to keep a space betw the parts,,,place 3 small washers or small nuts down on the bench when the press will set. That will keep the press elevated that amt and not squeeze the epoxy out when the bolts are sinched up as the stuff sets up.
Use 3 as the press will not wobble on 3 points.

When set up the release agent wax should allow you to remove the press and gasket from each other, the bolts and the bench. Use as is or add some extra gasket dressing as above and bolt back down.

The epoxy made gasket won't be as flexible as a leather gasket but should hold up well unless the bench and mounting is not secure and the two move while in use.
 
JB Weld dries hard as steel but it may work.
My Son actually mounted a scope mount on a Mosin Rifle using it and it worked great.
The only drawback would be unless you put wax paper or some other material between the JB Weld and the table you will remove the part of the table the tool is mounted too.
