Another mass shooting in Florida.

My two grandchildren (8 and 15) essentially live in their own online world on their iPads and phones. There is nothing I can do to stop it as their mother doesn't see anything wrong with it. Neither one seems to have violent tendencies, but also neither one has any social skills, in fact they seldom speak. They just gaze at their screens and text. At least the younger grandson doesn't play realistic violent games, mainly Angry Birds and Minecraft.

There are a growing number of college scholarships available for high level gamers. Several colleges now have competitive gaming teams. As with other shootings, the shooting should be considered separate from the event . . .

This was at some form of video game "competition"?

What a joke. The killer needs to PAY. Will be following.

...my opinion...

...violent video games are like training films to some individuals...

...desensitizing them to violence...

^^^^ exactly......it seems some individuals (not all) get lost in an "ethereal world" and don't recognize the reality of violence and death or the consequences of their actions.:( Combine this with a lack of responsible parenting and these people are like ticking time-bombs.

This individual was the Madden champion in 2017. Not sure what happened yet but again video games are involved. We are raising a bunch of loner kids that sit in a room playing fantasy games be it football or some sort of combat where death and maiming are the norm.

A picture says a thousand words...it is said. Just looking at the guy I note: 1. It is August and his skin is pale white - translation, he never goes outside and he sits in a dark room playing on the computer all day (no good for socialization). 2. His facial features are "gaunt" with bulged eyes, sunken sockets, prominent cheekbones etc. - translation, he is malnourished and doesn't eat often or eat nutritious foods because he's locked in his room all day playing video games. He might grab a Mountain Dew and a bag of chips or Twinkie on occasion. I haven't seen his post cranial parts but I'll guess he's scrawny with skinny arms and a flat chest. 3. His demeanor on camera is dreary, morbid and quiet - translation he takes this ++++ way too seriously. They're called "games" for a reason, they're supposed to be fun, others are there to play games and have fun. This clown is "playing for keeps." I wonder what surprises will come out in the following days. I suspect that this outburst had been a long time coming...and his family, friends (if any at all...I doubt), teachers, neighbors will probably tell of all sorts of warning signs which went unheeded.

i'm curious to find out where the shooter practiced shooting (if any) his firearm; since I live near Baltimore City, Maryland.

Kids are raised to believe that nothing is their fault and they can do whatever they want and never lose. We will see more of this as we overload our progeny with ridiculously unrealistic expectations.

As we "overload them with ridiculously unrealistic expectations"? Did you mean like acting like a human being, or....?
What are reasonable expectations? Should we hook them to feeding and watering machines and place game controllers in their hands, virtual reality goggles?
Like human veal?
I'm sorry, I seem to have asked quite a few questions in response to your observation...
I am starting to be convinced that the technology we have embraced is just too damn much for us, we are TOO connected, too much instant gratification (or instant rage, and acting on it)
Technology is killing us, but unlike The Terminator, it's not machines or robots. It's us.
And I don't see a way out.
And evil guns, of course...

When the shooter won this tournament in 2017, he pocketed $3,500. Lots of people make a living playing these games . . .

Not arguing, Muss, but what kind of a living can video gamers actually make if they apply themselves and are good at it?
Can it rival a 'real' job where someone applies themselves?
I honestly don't know, but I am not encouraging my boy to play video games instead of going to work..... unless there is real money to be made and a long-term future in it.
about 25 years ago a friend I had was an exceptional bowler. He decided to 'go professional'. He lasted two years before exhausting himself and his savings. He won sometimes, too. He said going pro took all the fun out of it. His story, his experience.
I know to some it seems like a lifetime ago, but in the grand scheme of things it wasn't that long ago that we were playing the Mario Brothers, and I do not recall the players murdering people. Things change. Change is not always good, but it sure is constant.

Unrealistic expectations, like understanding Common Core math.

Seems about like any other entertainment/xtreme sports occupation. There's money to be made, but the gap between the top and the bottom is pretty wide. And really, how much long-term future can any of us count on . . .

Millennial kids can earn $10,000 a month playing video games - MarketWatch

I live 35 miles SW of Jax.
My first reaction on hearing this news story was to contact my three adult children who live and work in Jax. All ok with them but this hit close to home.

Edit: Al Brown, former Mayor (D) of Jax is asking for removal of "these weapons of war".
I'm not sure that all the facts have been released yet, let alone what "weapon of war" was used, if any. But I'm relieved that our politicians are on top of the situation. ;(
We are about 50 miles west sad news

We are about 50 miles west sad news

Yes, sad news indeed. Innocent people hurt thru no fault of thier own.
Families impacted emotionally and financially. All because this individual through a temper tantrum.
And.....
I've already read that some of our state legislators are calling for stricter gun laws.
However, this investigation is still on going.
Again, not all the facts are known, as of yet.
And again, we have politicians calling for action that may not have any bearing on the case at hand.
And yet again, we'll have voters supporting these actions not knowing whether they will actually address any of these issues, but they feel good.
