I have a model 27-2 that I inherited from my dad. From my dad’s inventory notes "new, unfired in presentation case". Last year I had some extra time on my hands and started going through his guns to learn what I could about them. I knew this was a nice handgun, but I set it aside while I researched several others. The recent post from PALADIN85020 piqued my interest in this one.

Model 27-2, 5" barrel, TH, TT, TG, white outline rear sight, blue in presentation case. Serial N607913

From Roy Jinks book, I read that S&W started shipping this configuration in 1975. My dad picked it up in 1982. I don’t think he was the original owner.

The Blue Book value lists this model at 100% at $1,275 (including 50% premium for 5” barrel). The BB lists the 5” as discontinued in 1977. The BB doesn’t mention presentation cases. I also have no experience in how accurate the BB values are.

I’m interested in any information / comments the experts in this forum may have. I’m curious about the presentation case – was this common? Does it affect the value very much? The gun was stored in the case since I got in 2012, but I’m pretty sure that’s not the best idea (although it’s still in mint condition).

Great gun and you got lucky with the case storage for sure. Usually the blue flocking kinda rots off and can mess up the finish. Your era gun came in an unmarked blue box inside a large cardboard box where the label was affixed on outside and the presentation case was in the bottom in a plastic bag as I recall.

Welcome to the Forum!! Very, very nice model 27. Before the factory started shipping the Model 27 in full target configuration and with the wood presentation case, they shipped in a blue two piece cardboard box, in standard trigger and hammer and plain black sights.
The wood presentation cases are hard to find for the 5 inch guns. From what I have seen folks want for the presentation cases, I would think it adds at least $300 to the package.
I have seen some ridiculous asking prices lately, but if you want a value for insurance purposes, I would insure it for at least $2000, maybe even $2500.

I'm so sorry you can't (won't) shoot this fine gun ;) The condition seems to be real and the 5" presentation box a bit unusual. Enjoy!

Yeah, that's ironic isn't it? Too nice to shot. Well maybe I will one day, you can't take to the grave. But I have nice model 28 5-inch that's had a lot of rounds that I would shoot first. Thanks for the comments!

Beautiful gun.

My 5" 27-2 was shipped in May 1975 and the smooth presentation grips were added later on.

I'm the second owner and I have never shot this one but one day I will. I just haven't got around to it yet.

Looks like a real beauty. Your dad had good taste in guns. If as suspected, it's in perfect mechanical shape, and I were bidding on it, I'd be happy to get it for anything under 2K. The 5 inch is very popular. The presentation case does add value, but how much...???????

I agree with RGNewell on the pricing. The gun is in really nice shape and you may have dodged a bullet storing it in the case. Interesting that a very faint turn line shows on the right side and 0 shows in the left side pic. It is definitely a 100% gun. Your dad had good taste !

That is a nice 27-2 and your dad had great taste in revolvers. I have SN N607735 that shipped in March 1979 and although, S&W did not ship in SN order, and your 27-2 could have shipped little before or after, I would expect that it shipped somewhere near that date. You would need to request a Historical Letter on that to confirm the ship date.

Thanks for sharing,

Yeah OP, you got a gem....no question about it.
To do with what you will.
I would consider your Father didn't want it to be shot....for a reason.
