I have a 28-2 Serial No. S305XXX. That is how the frame is marked.
My question concerns markings on the crane.
They are
31471
N
230
LD
Does anyone know what all of the additional markings are?

My 28 is a no dash,S2011xx that shipped in 1960. I had a pair of diamond magnas on it that I picked up at a flea market. {I personally don't care for magnas} and sold them to a Forum member. It was my 1st online purchase. The diamond target stocks came from my Dad. He bought them for something in the 60's. Neither set was refinished. Now, if I could find a reasonable 4" ??? Bob

Another Mod. 28 Question

Hello all. Thanks for the response Bill. Was it common for a 28 to leave the factory with target everything? I thought that was the purpose of the Model 27.

Model 28s were usually shipped with a standard hammer and trigger and Magna stocks, although the model was cataloged with target stocks as an extra cost option. Model 27s were usually shipped similarly until September 1975 when the model was upgraded with a target hammer and trigger, target stocks made of Goncalo alves, and a mahogany presentation case.

I think that back in the day you could buy blister packs with a target hammer and trigger and new target stocks were to be found at gun shops for not to much either. Guys would buy a new gun, deck it out and either put the original parts away or toss them. I remember busting apart a pair of magnas just for the screw parts in the late 70s

I have a really nice 4" 28-2 that I picked up in a pawn shop a good while back that had a TT, TH and a nice set of target grips

My 28 no dash (1957/58) 4 screw has target hammer and trigger and target stocks but those are put away. Honestly would prefer standard H/T and magna stocks.

Another Model 28

I got mine from my dealer who was selling it for a friend of his. He was the original owner from what I was told. It has tt, th, target stocks and rr/wo sights.

Another 28

I will try getting getting pictures. Not very good at phone extras.

Reasonable 4"? I don't believe that exists anymore. Sad.

In this day and age, nothing is 'reasonable' any longer. Don't even think about buying a new or used car now, let alone a single family dwelling.

Can I ask this? What would be reasonable for one in very good condition? Prices here vary considerably, and 4" models seem hard to find on the forum.

I like the smaller grips better, as the target grips are uncomfortable and don't control recoil as well, being fat at the bottom, not the palm. JMHO.

$1000+/- seems to be the going rate for nice condition "shooter", maybe a bit more, with box, docs, and tools, but most 28's got separated from their accessories, a long time ago.
Deals can still be found, even on the auction sites but, I think you are more likely to get lucky at the LGS or pawn shop. My last Highway Patrolman purchase was earlier this year, at an LGS. Found a 4-screw, birth-year (1959) 4", with after-market stocks and a Hunter holster, nothing else. It was just under $700 OTD.

I believe that now days $700 for a decent 28 is a good deal. It is a real good deal on a 4" 4 screw.
Many of us have bought them for less in the past. But, many of us bought houses in the past for well under $100,000 too. The days of the $4-500 N frame are gone. There may be a few being sold by out of touch sellers or people just wanting some money fast. Best of luck finding them. I am always looking myself.

Well . . . yes. When I came back from my second year in SE Asia, Deb and I bought a 3 bedroom ranch style house on 1/2 acre with chain link fenced yard and 17 fruit trees for $17,500. Sold it five years later for $35,000.

Of course, in 1972, gold was $35 per ounce. :(

That's a very nice piece you got there. I put a 28-2 on layaway last month for about 750 bucks. Good condition but with aftermarket stocks. What holster is that? I'd love to have one for my 28.
