Very nice, love those 1950 models. Not sure that a letter would tell you much more than which distributor it went to and exactly when; you might get lucky though. I have three of the pre-24 targets in the S14XXXX range; one was shipped April 21, 1955 to Higgenbothan-Pearlstone Hardware Co., Dallas, TX. Another to Rex Firearms in NYC on July 20, 1955 and the third to Matthews & Boucher and Company in Rochester NY on December 23, 1955. Great find, enjoy it.

Also have a couple of the 4 inch 1950s, one only a couple hundred SNs away form yours went to John Jovino in NYC also in 1955. The second one, earlier around S96XXX I haven't lettered yet.

The thing about this one is that it is some what of a pinto.
It has a mat blue finish on the frame and the barrel is a bright blue. Basically every thing looks as new/matching numbers everywhere except for the barrel which has no number. So it is a mystery why the barrel was changed.

I agree the barrel was probably changed, particularly since there is no serial number stamped on it. S&WHF records concerning repair and refinish are very spotty at best so it is unlikely there is anything to be found.

It is possible the barrel was changed during manufacture as part of a rework operation (as quite a few guns were reworked). Evidence of this would be a lightly stamped R on the lower left side of the grip frame.

Here are some photos of the grip frame.

Thank you Bill, that is good information. I am now pretty sure the barrel was not a factory replacement based on the lack of any stampings or numbers on the gun.
