Another new Ahrends thread

There is nothing as nice as oiled cocobolo. Unfortunately that wood was recently placed (June 2013) in CITES Appendix 2 status, which limits its export to finished goods. The closest replacement is likely moradillo, or old-fashioned black walnut.

Most varieties of rosewood and several other exotic tropical woods are also import restricted. I like walnut and goncalo alves if the wood is figured. most of the recent GA grips I've seen have nearly no figure or grain.

It's always a little tough to tell from pictures, but I was wondering how the length of the Ahrends compares to factory targets or Hogue. The pictures make them look a bit shorter. I like the feel of Hogue, but the way they attach to the frame always seems to make the grip disproportionately long to my eyes.

I also like Ahrends grips, although I have just two sets. Very nice fit and finish on both. Here is a set of maple I purchased from a fellow forum member.

Another vote for the Ahrends retro combat; another guy with stubby fingers and a Mod. 57 with an 8 3/8" bbl. Ahrends gives me all the help I need holding that beauty.

Recoil

The stocks all look great! I was wondering, though: do any of you using the finger-groove styles experience any battering of your finger joints by the raised ridges when using full-power magnum loadings, namely .357 or .44? The last (and only) wooden finger-groove stocks I tried were on a 6" Model 19. They were nice to hold, but when I used full-power ammunition, I got some rather painful shocks, especially to the lower joint of my third finger. It hurt for days afterward. I've shied away from the wooden ones ever since (many years). Perhaps it was just the stock contour? I have what I guess is an "average"-sized hand, and, who likes pain?
