I don't remember anyone changing the buffer or the spring to compensate for short stroking. I do remember people opening up the gas port with the next biggest drill bit to fix the problem. I would strongly suggest you search out the thread or two on the subject to get the exact bit size.
Fortunately, mine functions with 7.62 and .308 just fine out of the box.
Out of curiosity, how have you lubed your bolt and have you cleaned the rifle before taking it out? You will be surprised how dirty a new firearm is and the bolt carrier group needs to be run wet for a while.
If you have done both of those, then the gas port is the next step. After making sure there isn't a burr or something clogging the hole or the gas block, of course.

As good as AR rifles are, they just won't take the abuse an AK will. AKs were made specifically for people who more than likely will never clean their rifle or take care of it. In some ways, I think the Russians had it right.

I would start with the smaller bit first in order to not over compensate and result in the BCG smacking into the back of the upper receiver at the gas key. This is assuming you choose and need to go that route.

Before you take a drill to the gas port, consider this. Mine would not lock back on 7.62 Nato ammo when new. .308 ammo, no problem. Now that I have several hundred rounds downrange, it has no problems with 7.62 ammo.
Could your rifle just need breaking in? Oh, in all my AR's, I remove the bolt group prior to shooting and hose it off with CLP. Shake off the excess, reinstall and shoot!
