Margaret Betts, WWII codebreaker, passes at 99. What exactly she did is unlikely to be revealed in my lifetime, if at all. The Brits like their secrets.

I've watched a lot of videos from ww2 historians on YouTube, and the work of Mrs. Betts & her colleagues has been one of the most fascinating and rewarding(inspiring is the better term) stories I've seen. As mentioned it's largely still a classified effort, but I was surprised at how much was revealed. We're greatly indebted to those folks.

My mom and I talked about the code breakers today after the announcement of Maggie's death and she has always harbored an intense pride for their vital war effort roles.

She also, to this day, is still disappointed in the disgraceful treatment Alan Turing received years after his astounding contribution in cracking Enigma.

It still rankles me.

She might have worked with or known my gf's old boss, Valerie Travis, who was the "Travis" in Travis and Emery antique music book shop in London. Valerie was the daughter of Sir Edward Travis, the operational head of Bletchley Park and worked there.

Have read several books about Bletchley Park, amazing is all that can be said.

I met an older gentleman last night at our gun club. He was wearing a cap that read "WWII AND KOREA VETERAN" I had an enjoyable talk with him. He is 98 and served with the Navy in the Normandy Invasion, got out of the Navy, joined the Army, and later served in Korea. Not many of them left.

My dad fought in the ETO. He never knew he was part of the "Greatest Generation" until he read it in Tom Brokaw's book in 1998.
