got a buddy with a pristine K22 6" about 25 years old. He bought it new, has barely fired it. I haven't seen it for a few years but tomorrow I'll be able to check the model # for sure.

He's thinking of selling it to me. Has original blue paper box, the factory paper, 2 original wood grips, a holster with S&W medallion on it...he's talking $600 range. Seems a bit steep.

I've been looking for a k22 for awhile and i've seen prices from $350(lots of wear) to $800 asking price.

The gun you describe with box, papers, and holster sounds like a good package. I don't think $600 sounds too bad.

Too much.

S&W eliminated pinned barrels in 1982. It should be a Model 17-4 (1977-88) if the carbon dating is even close!

I wouldn't pay $600 for the gun you describe, even if it was pinned. I might if it was an earlier gun ANIB. $450-$500 sounds much better between friends.

I missed a chance on 1952 (?), pinned and recessed. It was in good shape but someone shot it.... alot, price $285.

thanks for the comments gents....

update inspection revealed this:

M17-3 6" in about 99% condition Target trigger;

2 original factory grips, nearly perfect;

1 'combat gripper' wood grips in about 97%, only a few small blems on the bottom;

1 S&W medallioned holster, used with some wear marks and indentations in the leather, otherwise top shape.

Factory blue paper box with docs and original anti-rust paper.

My decision: too good and too expensive for a shooter; not quite collector enough for that kind of investment. Passed at $650/

Offer him $550. The way I look at it is how many in this condition have you seen ? If quite a few, don't worry about it. If the answer is none, then chances are you won't be seeing any for a while and the deal you passed up will be haunting you. So, I would offer him what you feel comfortable paying.
One thing I don't understand - you say the gun is 99% but the holster has wear marks. Is this holster for this gun ? Usually there will be wear marks on the end of the barrel and around the cylinder if it has been holstered.

It may be too expensive for a shooter, but it is not "too good".

Why not make him a counter-offer?

i have a chance to buy a 17-2 ser# range 540000
has a model 17 box k22 masterpeice, not numbered to the gun. a holster to. all for $400

So it's a 450-500 boxed gun.I figure the holster and extra grips, if S&W combat grips gotta be worth another 100.For a gun with a known history, I'd certainly spring for 600,and if I had to, and wanted it,I'd do the extra 50 too,but between friends,600 is fair to everyone.
