I was waiting for one of you guys to post Harrison Ford thread, so I could post another PT-22 thread.
I have posted a couple of threads about Buddy Frank- World War II Navy Pilot, Guadalcanal, One of the first Navy Pilots to be jet qualified, etc.
At the end of World War II he was attending test pilot school in England.
Between the time he came back from the South Pacific until he went to England, he was a training squadron commander. And the airplane they flew was the PT-22.
So after the war he was at home in Texas. And he heard about some PT 22s that were for sale.
So he decided that he would drive over and buy one.
So he and his wife drove over to look at the airplanes.
His plan was to find one with inflated tires, gasoline and a good battery. Then he would crank it and fly it home.
When They got there, they saw a bunch of airplanes including a number of PT-22s.
He had trouble getting them to sell him a good one but after he got mad they did sell him one.
Then his wife takes over the story - she heard a plane start up, and was waiting for him to taxi out to the grass runway.
Suddenly she saw this plane take off from the middle of the parking area.
Frank said he was pretty mad. So he cranked it, taxied out and went full throttle.
Checked the mags on the roll, and took off.
Then he Flew back to his hometown. He only had that little bird for a couple of years.
I wonder is it the same one that Harrison Ford crashed?
