Another Roper Question

How many revolvers where fitted with Ropers from the factory? I have heard of a one Reg Mag lettering as having been fitted with Ropers. So how many more have been?

Few, if any. Here's the text of a letter from S&W dated January 7, 1938:

We are in receipt of your letter of January 5, and in reply would say that inasmuch as Roper stocks are not manufactured by us and not supplied here at the factory, but are fitted by Mr. Roper himself, we have not deemed it advisable to include in any of our invoices covering revolvers having Roper stocks the cost of such handles.

For your information we might add that we have received orders for revolvers equipped with special King sights, which has necessitated our sending the arms to the D. W. King Gun sight Co. to have the sight applied. In this case, too, our invoices have covered only the cost of the revolvers as manufactured by us, the billing for the special sights being rendered by the King Co.

This letter was in response to a inquiry from S&W Distributor Kelley-How-Thomson Co., Duluth, MN. By the way the Roper bill for a medium size hand for stocks for a .357 Magnum was $6.50. (Roy Jinks archives)

Interesting that this 1938 letter from the factory refers to stocks as "handles". I love it.

Yeah.

Sometimes folks get so excited about correct nomenclature. Like "stocks" as correct vice "grips." I get a kick out of pointing out, now and then, that RL Wilson calls 'em "grips" in at least some places in the Colt Book of Firearms. Sorta like guys who get all worked up over callin' a revo a pistol.
