My granddaughter recently lost her keys to her Jeep and had a locksmith make a new key. The key worked, started the Jeep and all was good... until she locked it and used the new key! That engaged the security system, alarm, ect, and shut the vehicle down! She had the 'smith come back and he worked on it a bit and told he couldn't help her and she should junk it! Oh, and no refund as "he didn't do anything wrong!" The local dealer won't help as it is too old. Apparently the remade key isn't even a chip key, at the very least, the 'smith couldn't program it. Another locksmith suggested if she bought a universal key, they could program it but later decided that probably wouldn't help.

Does anyone here understand the working of a device that is apparently known at the immobilizer? Any suggestions on what she might try to reclaim her Jeep?

I would do a google search for 'immobilizer 1994 cherokee' on Jeep forums. You will probably find a lot more information there.

My guess is that there are already workarounds.

A 'worst case' option would be to buy an ECU/key set off of eBay if it works like many of the immobilizers from that period and the key is tied to the computer.

Op,

Your Jeep does not use a transponder (chip) key. 1998 and newer does. And it does not have a SKIM module. The Skim passes on the transponder frequency to the computer.

I’m no alarm expert but I found instructions on the net to reset the system. May be in the owners manual too.

Also, if she had a remote and lost it with the key, this could be the problem. But an alarm reset should work hopefully.

In the last 20 or so years Chrysler alarm systems haven’t been engineered very well. They are not as user friendly like other brands.

If you can’t solve the problem yourself call another dealer. I would never call the other dealer again for anything.
