My Son is getting Sworn in to the Coast Guard Monday. Has a degree in Kinesiology but his true love is the sea. He is doing something I kick myself daily for not doing and I am proud of the boy. Forgive a dad for gloating.

Hey cage that is awsome I wish more young folks would join something anything but gangs and crap. My oldest son followed in dads footsteps Army National Guard. Currently serving in Kuwait. Sends pics of his coins he recieivs from the brass and the different places he goes. Does make you want to poke your chest out a bit hu.

Coasties...hard working and under appreciated in my book. I used to know a guy that was a retired Coastie that ran a gun shop, hell of a nice guy, and he knew his stuff about firearms as well. Best of luck to your son. Semper Paratus.

Congrats Caj, to your son!
My dad was an enlisted CG pharmacists mate on the DE Chambers in N. Africa and the Med. in WWII.

Congrats to both of you, they are a fine bunch!
We were boarded for inspection off Pensacola a couple of months ago they asked for firearms I had 2 handguns aboard they asked where they were and unloaded them then checked the usual stuff on the boat, all was in order. The went on their way, very professional and courteous no problem at all about the firearms.

Anyone who raises his right hand and promises
to "protect and defend the Constitution..." deserves a salute.

Caj:

Congrats and best wishes as well as my gratitude to your son. You have every right to be proud and a touch boastful.

Through the years I have "adopted" many of the friends of my children. One of them is currently in USCG boot camp in Maryland.

Congratulations to you and him. BTW, did they get rid of the height requirement?

Caj,
My sincere congrats to you both, and my thanks to the young man for his service.

At least somebody in the family made something of himself.....

See alot of Coasties here in south Florida and are a good bunch of service men and women.

Saw a crew in Keys years ago at the dock. 4 Coasties with jeans, blue shirts and deck shoes (all issue). M-16 in the rack along with couple of chromed 870 riot guns. All wearing SIG. The bikini babe were casting off their bow and stern line. Thought to my self "military life is a bitch"

Hope your son the best and an assignment in the Fl. keys

My dad, a WW II Navy vet, used to kid a friend of his, a WW II Coast Guard vet, about having to be at least six feet tall to be a Coastie.

You know, in case the ship sinks, the crew can walk to shore.

Congrats Caj on your son joining the Naval Service.

Good for you, dad - and congratulations to you both!

We don't have many sea ports hereabouts, but if'n we did, I'd want your son to be guarding them.

As a member of the Navy.. I was fortunate to spend 6 months attached to a Coast Guard Ice Breaker.. ( To Antarctica and Back..) during Operation DEEP FREEZE 1969.. I have a deep respect for them ever since.. No Shallow Water Sailors are they...
Good luck to your son.. and a tip of my hat to him..

A Coastie told me that joke, so I figured it's not too disparaging.

Congrats, sir, to you and best wishes to your son. You both have something to be proud of.

After putting in four years in the Army, I enlisted in the Coast Guard. I was active duty from 1986-1990. Got to work the 44' Motor Life Boats on the Oregon coast, then did two years on the USCGC Active (210' Medium Endurance Cutter) out of Port Angeles, Wa. I was a Storekeeper (Petty Officer 2nd Class). Highlight of the tour was I got to work the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Prince William Sound. (Got to spend some time on Kodiak Island also). The Coast Guard is filled with some of the finest servicemen and women we have. And, before any Navy guys comment about "shallow water sailors", I was underway 272 days of the last year I was in the CG.

Congratulations Gary,
Obviously you did something right. (or was it the missus?)
