Any crossbow hunters here?

I'm fixen to be. I ordered one of those PSE crossbow uppers for an AR15 lower. Hopefully it will be here soon. Here in Texas, starting this season, you can now hunt with a crossbow during archery season. I'm gonna give it a whirl.

Where is Wilhelm Tell when you need advice like this? :D

Swissman?

Does anyone else remember Finn, the blonde cutie on, "the Lost World", who used that nifty little crossbow?

Seriously, what's the effective range of a modern crossbow?

I have a Horton, not sure of the model, with x bow scope. Accurate and powerful to about 35 yards, probabbly more. Cabela's sells em.

Why 'scope a crossbow? How far will they shoot effectively? I'm really curious. I see quite a few photos of them with scopes that might make more sense on a .270...

I shoot an Excalibur Exocet 200 with a scope on it. The scope (2X) has crosshairs for 20 yard and then small triangles going down in 10 yard increments to 50 yards. It is very accurate but like any bow you must practice with it. The whole set up is equivalent to buying a new rifle price wise $600 +. You can find cheaper prices on other brands but I really like the simplicity of Excalibur, very easy to use and you can fix a broken bow string in the field in 10 minutes.
Do a web search, they have a very informative website. They use to have a short video of the president of the company hunting elephant in Africa with his crossbow.

Just purchased a new 10 Point. Looking fwd. to deer hunting in October when the weather is normally more moderate and predictable than the middle of November during gun season.

I had surgery on both shoulders and could no longer pull a bow so three years ago I bought a Barnett Quad 400 ($349). It's taken two bull elk so far, a 5x5 bull elk the first year, and the second year a small 6x7 bull, so they do work quite well on game. That said, the Barnett is heavy compared to a Ten point I was looking at a few days ago which has a much better sight system to boot. Although the Barnett has worked for me I'm finding there are others that are more user friendly. I'll be getting a different one for next year and I especially like the idea of being able to change the string on the Excaliber myself as mentioned by Rangerpat. I don't recall the model of the Ten Point but it was $379 at Sportsman's Wharehouse and if I had it to do over that's what I would have got the first time. Get the best one you can afford and practice, practice, practice. Good luck.

What does a modern crossbow bolt/quarrel look like, and is it shorter than an arrow for a conventional bow?

I have a Horton Hunter XS, 200 pounds draw weight.
Bought as a bundle with scope.
Kills everything on the spot like the .300WinMag.
Good quality crossbow, no complaints.
Don't buy a cheap one, you will regret it if something "Made in China" breaks close to your face ...!

Crossbow bolts come in a variety of lengths and materials. They are generally constructed of aluminum or carbon for durability and consistency in size and weight, and can have either two or three feathers or vanes. Standard lengths vary between 16" and 22". Bolts have either flat nocks or half moon nocks. Half moon nocks tend to fire bolts more accurately, as the cocking string seats against each bolt in exactly the same position every time.

??

Just thinking and that makes my head hurt but where I live you can not have a gun when you are bow hunting . With the lower having the ser.# and consider the gun. I don't think I could get away with it here. How about you?

I have owned 2 crossbows. Mine were not good ones. I gave them away.

I have read that many crossbows are capable of hitting a man at a quarter of a mile. I don't know this to be true but I don't doubt it...

Texas Star, sorry but I can't help you. This serie was not popular in Switzerland.

Swissman-

I thought the guy was your national hero! I wasn't talking about a TV series. You know, the man who was forced to shoot an apple off of his son's head by the Austrian ruler?
I think he then killed the ruler.

Tell was famed for his skill with a crossbow.
