I have a hankering for one of these in .45 Colt with either 4" or 5.5" BBL. I don't want an old one with antique value, but do want a Colt. What's the good, the bad, and ugly on these?

The current production guns are quite nice.Keep in mind the 45s still tend to have oversized throats.

Thank you arjay. That's especially annoying at a $1400 price level. I reload and can solve that problem, but non-standard size slugs typically cost a bit more.

Mine will let a 452 fall through the chambers, but a 454 will hang up nicely.Several of the comnercial casters do carry that size.My most accurate load so far is a 200 gr rnfp with a case full of APP.Shoots right to poa at 25 yards.

I caught the SAA fever about a month ago- still looking around - there is a 2yr wait for a new one from the factory from what I understand. There are new production around but they cost around the $2K+ - the 357's seem to be priced lower than the 45's. I was leaning 357 for my "first" just to shoot 38's.

Those Colts will cost you a Fistful of Dollars.
I have two Ubertis, and they are both fine shooters with good triggers. I could have bought a Colt For a Few Dollars More, but the Ubertis will do just fine for now.
The throats on my 45 Colt Uberti are 0.452". A bullet sized to 0.452" will hang up in the throats, but push through with light pressure.
I would consider buying a Colt New Frontier, in order to have the adjustable rear sight.

I bought a new one in .45 Colt with a 4 5/8" barrel two years ago. A .454 sized bullet with pass through the cylinder throats, the bore is .451. I could live with oversized throats, but mine shoots high with every bullet weight I've tried in it. I would make you a very good deal on it if you lived closer.

I've owned several Ubertis and never had grief like this. I hope all new Colts aren't as poor as mine.

I just bought a Uberti a few weeks ago. See this thread, beginning with post #20: http://smith-wessonforum.com/firear...y-arrived-cimarron-colt-1873-7th-cavalry.html

The throats in my Uberti measure exactly .452" using plug gauges. The groove diameter of the barrel is slightly tighter - about .450" to .451". That's a great combination for accuracy using .452" bullets.

Of course, the primitive sights leave a lot to be desired. But so do the sights on an original Colt, a S&W Triple Lock, or any other early S&W HE. That's the way they were.

Of all the .44 and .45 revolvers I have I would have to say this Uberti is set up the best when judging the throats in relation to the groove diameter. They got it right!

Mine SAA

Last year, I was browsing the local gun shop when the UPS Driver showed up with some boxes. I was looking around, when I heard the guy behind the counter say "What the hell?" He pulled out a Colt SAA P1870, 45LC with the 7 1/2" Barrel. He claimed he never ordered it and that the distributor made a mistake. I ended up dropping $1540.00 including tax. Wife wasn't too happy, but I'm overjoyed.

I bought two new 3rd gen Colt SAA's when I retired in 2008. A 4 5/8th" "black powder" frame and a 7 1/2" "cross latch" frame both in .45 Colt. The dealer warned me about the "black Powder" frame if I wanted to shoot it, didnt listen. Turns out the screw in the frame to secure the cylinder pin is ridiculously small in diameter and is prone to breakage, try getting the sheared off flush screw out of the frame! And no, I didn't over tighten the screw. Fixed that by using a "locking" cylinder pin. Finish is great on both but grip frame fit to frame is rather poor, something to look at before you buy a particular one. Both amazingly shoot to the sights and accuracy is good with .454" sized bullets. The later gen 3's do have the removeable cylinder bushings. Now keep in mine both of mine came with an attached warning tag that stated, Warning, shooting this revolver will reduce it's value! Now that I found funny! If you get one or two let us know.

The latest Colts especially the New Frontiers are supposed to be much better. The only Colt I have is a custom NF the Jim Stroh and Alan Harton worked over. That said I have bought 6-7 USFA single action guns since I bought the NF and they are nicer and better finished than any of the model P's I have seen or held.

Personally, for use as a shooter, I'd go for the Uberti 1873. I already have a couple of Rugers. I don't want any more collectible Colts.

Hold out for the Colts. You will never be sorry.

Listen to the man. He is right.

Not to be out of the way..Colts are 4 3/4...Rugers are 4 5/8.

Well in my defence I have been hanging out with a lot of Ruger's lately! I already had a lot of Ruger SA's but when Lipsey's came out with the Ruger mid frame flat top in .44 Special and then with the mid frame flat top in .45 Colt I spent myself stupid. Yes my Colt SAA is 4 3/4".
