Any firearm historians here??

Something caught my eye today watching an episode of "Laramie".It was a shooting contest involving rifles.Most of the contestants were shooting lever actions but one man had what looked like a SA (single action) rifle with a cylinder like on a revolver.

Could this have been an actual rifle from the old days or just something one of the armorers cooked up?

Sorry but there was no way to record or take a picture of the rifle in question.

Colt did, at one time, make a revolver carbine.

Colt among other companies did make a revolving rifle.

Really not that popular, as if you held it wrong you could get your supporting hand chewed up!

Another in John Wayne' s El Dorado....... the jailer had one /or a revolving shotgun.

Given that this is the S&W Forum I guess we should acknowledge that S&W made one too. Search on Model 320 Revolving Rifle and you can see plenty of pictures on this forum.

Yes, they definitely existed, from Colt and S&W. Interestingly, on an early episode of the TV version of the "Highlander", so that's at least a couple of decades ago, a revolver-rifle made an appearance. It was a 19th century weapon.

Colt produced a few (less than 50 I believe) SAA revolvers with bbls longer than the standard 7.5" and were fitted with a detachable all metal skeleton stock. These were made in the period running up to 1890 or so. Some had special rear sights, more like a rifle rear sight.

No forend, bad place to put your hand when firing, But with the longer bbl and the stock attached, it makes for a eye catcher of a weapon.
Plenty of repro SA's have been made in that configuration though the years. I think even Colt had a commemorative SAA in the 80's(?) with the detachable stock and a 16" bbl to avoid legal problems.

I'm sure some true to life conversions were done during the Wild West period by gunsmiths also. They liked projects back then too I think and didn't have an NFA to worry about.

There are Remington 1890 repro revolver 'carbines' around too with a fixed stock. Don't know if Remington actually ever made such an animal,,don't think so, but I'm not The Old Settler.

Colt revolving rifle(?),,might be a cut down revolving shotgun.
I don't see the rear sight from a rifle version, the forend looks longer than normal.
What ever Hollywood needed for the shot.

...yep...that's an 1855 Colt Root Rifle...you can see the rather prominent side hammer...
