Any GSD fans here?

I hate what show breeders have done to a magnificent breed.......... hips & back like a stinking hyena, dogs so innately stupid they need help finding their food bowls but look "pretty"...... no working attitude, protection, herding etc... One of our troopers had a great GSD (police dog) that would even try to point quail, he'd hesitate very strongly.......& track wounded game too...... As you can tell, I was serious about liking those dogs I talked about above, so much that I gently/briefly considered swiping them, magnificent all.... heck they were almost as good as a good working Doberman (said ducking from throw bottles & cans)..........

Initially bred for working livestock in the field. Max von Stephanitz states in his book the black in the coat is from a breeding with a wolf within the first 10 dogs. Rin Tin Tin was the worst thing that happened to the breed. Everyone had to have one and that was the beginning of the trouble.

The Cold War was perhaps the best, as a lot of good working stock was kept behind the iron curtain out of reach for many years. This is my Heide. (rip 2008) East German cross. Her great grandmother was the mother of Manhattan. Manhattan being the only German Shepherd to win Westminster so far.

OK, I just have to comment on this.

I love my dog and she's a wonderful companion, but sometimes...

Saturday my wife and son went on a hike near the Kern river. Now that river is glacier runoff and you'd swear it's colder than 32°F. Even so, my dog loves the water. So, in she went. The water was so cold that Sage, the dog, was whining because it hurt. Did she get out of the water? NO! Now that's dumb. Still love her...(face-palm).

German Shepherds of all types were very common where I grew up in the 50s/60s. I say all types because I remember a longer legged thinner dog and some short stocky ones. Same breed? The most common thing they were called was police dogs. Never saw a Doberman till I was a teen. I can certainly remember the dogs behavior was directly linked to the interest the owner showed them.

He is developing a schedule already. He plays for a while, then heads over to his dog bed for a nap. When he wakes, we take him outside to pee. So far, one accident in the house.

Well, just a minute ago, he woke up from a nap. Stood up, stepped off his dog bed, whimpered and left the room headed for the back door. I looked at the wife & said "your turn", so she took him out.

And this is his first day of ever being inside any house. I hope potty training stays this quick & easy!

Dog training with a German Shepherd is so damn easy you sometimes think you're cheating.
Bring your A game to the table though, as easy as it is to teach them something they will turn the tables on you just as quickly.

Yeah, he is a vocal little guy sometimes!

Oh it is just beginning.....but you are going to love him. Loyal, hard working and protective. Mine will herd the grandchildren when they have wondered too far from the house out into the pasture. He knows it's his job and he loves it. To keep these dogs happy they have to have a job. It can be whatever it is you want it just has to be part of thier routine or their energy gets mis-directed. Have fun.

Great looking GSD 307. I love how smart the breed is. They really key in on their owners personality and body language. Here is a couple pics of my guy, Jake, at about 8 weeks old.

Beautiful pup! My wife and I both agree when we get our next dog he will be a GSD. Right now we have a 2 year old male Bullmastiff and a 1.5 year old female Cane Corso. I'm a Mastiff lover but once we get some more land a GSD will be added to the mix.

What will you be feeding hI'm if you don't mind me asking?
