Recently acquired a used dao 64-6 from J&G Sales. I'm curious about two dimples that are on the bottom of the barrel directly above the ejector rod. One is on the center line of the barrel, the other about 3/8" above the first and ever so slightly off the barrel center line. With the cylinder in place both dimples are hidden by the ejector rod if viewed straight down with the gun upside down. At first glace they look like the could be from a Rockwell tester. But they are of different depths, and diameters, and look deeper and larger that other Rockwell dimples I've seen (albeit in much harder material than ss). And why would there be two??

Any ideas?????

By the way this is my first Smith and am extremely pleased with it!

I think that it's quite possible that they are from a hardness test, perhaps Brinnel. As for the size, my hunch is that gun barrels are not nearly as hard as many believe, probably in the high 20's to low or mid 30's on the Rockwell C scale. However, I haven't ever actually tested a gun barrel for hardness so that is only a guess based on how easily a barrel can be dimpled or marked by careless handling.

The slide on a good autopistol will usually be around 40 on the Rockwell C scale, but i don't know about revolver barrels.
