I just picked up a model 40 (no dash) last week for $250. Its got a little bit of thinning on the cylinder bluing, but its not too bad at all. I just couldn't pass it up ! :) Did I get a good deal ? Also, if anyone could help me with the born on date that would be awesome. The ser. # 228**. Thanks.

:) I think you got a real good deal. The S&W book is not very precise on the DOB but I will guess around 1969 or 70. That will be pretty close. Also welcome to the forum. Don

Thanks for the warm greeting to the forum. I looked in my S&W book also and thought maybe someone on here might know more. Thanks again

You got a great gun at a great price!!!

No dash model 40's often sell for more than $600.

Yea. I knew that they'd been going higher and higher. A great thing about that mod 40 is that he had hogue grips on it, but kept ahold of the original smooth walnut ones. They hardly have a mark on them, and they quickly replaced the hogue grips when i got it home.

Congrats on your newly acquired 40. You got a smoke'n deal..!!

My favorite pocket pistol. I have two of them.

Careful when removing the stocks in case the pin that deactivates the grip safety is still there. Most were lost by unaware owners.

That was the first thing I checked for when i removed the stocks, and unfortunately it was gone already. :( Somewhere in that guns distant past that pin vanished, never to be seen again.
