Ok, I got the first part figured out, and I used "bonded"bullets, but I don't think that's what they're looking for in the "bond" part.
Someone else will have to figure that part out.

The instructions to the kids appear confusing to me. I heard the guy who wrote the question was repeatedly kicked in the head ...... until he was nearly dead.... but he recovered .......... partially .......... well not so much. Maybe that explains the question?

I know for sure Common Core is good because I went to the Common Core links provided by AKtinman and the answers to every FAQ said Common Core was good.......... and no matter what none of you are changing my mind.

Hang in there. Maybe you can use J-frame speed loaders to teach little Dino "making 5" and "taking from 5"?

Not knowing what it meant I had to look up "Number bond" and, in my mind, it is simply a new term for an old concept, i.e. number pairs. In other words simply pairs of numbers that make up a given number. I also looked into the "making ten" and "taking from 10" and the more I looked into this "new math" it really looked like "old math" recycled and with new terminology.

I work with a lot of parents and many, if not most, have been perplexed by this "new math" and new terminology. It seems to have made it harder to help their kids with math and I'm not sure how that's a good thing?

They should be taken out and beaten with a fan belt. I volunteer in our local elementary school and I see this all the time.

Last week it was genetics in 5th grade- similar unit to the genetics in my high school biology, but covered in half the time. Genes, alleles, dominant and recessive traits, punnett squares, great stuff but covered in one week with kids who had no context, no foundation for it.

And the teachers just totally sweating it cause it's all covered on the end of grade tests, which is apparently a big part of their evaluation.

It's really an awful thing.

Ugh! That's a page from the "Engage New York" curriculum that, if I understand correctly, started in New York to try to help with Common Core, Other states, in their scramble to figure out the common core, have adopted it.

I look at this stuff all day at work and none of us can believe it's going to the schools! Will be interesting to see if they do it again next year or not.

New Math was introduced when I was in Jr. High back in the mid-60's. That put me put of the "college" or "business" classes when I entered high school. Ended up flunking out of shop class in High School. Managed to graduate by pumping gas at the service station on a "work release" school program.

Went in the Merchant Marine right after High School. Learned how to study. Learned Math the old fashioned way. Started Engineering College 6 years later, got my BSME but didn't finish my Masters (6 years of Calculus is enough already).

Yes, I was a NASA Engineer briefly, for the last 25 years I'vw worked in Nuclear.

So much for the introduction. Here is why we have the new and improved Math. Some people never understand math. Generally they end up being school teachers, working in Human Resources, or become Politicians. These people believe there is some secret (besides hard work) that allows some people to master math. So they have to come up with a new, improved method to make it "easy" for everyone to understand math. They beleive something has to be simpler than rote memorization.

My Daughter is a School teacher by choice. Not because she cant do the work. She graduated from college on a 5 year program in 4 years. I am proud that my daughter is a teacher. So I dont appreciate people lumping ALL teachers in a bad category.

I hope I wasn't, my eldest daughter taught Junior High Algebra. After 10 years she gave up with the Union dictates. Hope your daughter is different and can push back
