The subject came up on another site and it got me to wondering about this group. I was reminded about this event and thought I'd run it past y'all and see if we had any bull riders in here.

Believe it or not I actually have a bull riding story of my own. And no I'm not talking about the mechanical bull at Gilley's, although I did ride that a few times.

The actual bull ride is that My cousin was raised on a dairy farm near Valley Mills Texas. I used to spend a couple of weeks there every summer. The summer I turned 13 they had a couple of yearling bulls in a section of the large pen. My cousin talked me in to riding one of them. I said no but he went first and then insisted that it was a lot of fun. I still didn't really want to do it but he didn't have any trouble so I thought I'd just do it and get it over with.

I got on the bull and he ran straight to the 5 rail fence and turned and ran all the length of that side of the pen scraping my left leg and hip against the wood rails. I would rather he'd just bucked me off and got the whole deal over with but noooo. I quickly learned why cowboys wear chaps. An evening spent pulling splinters out of my leg and hip instilled that fact deeply in my mind.

My cousin ran over and grabbed the bulls head (he didn't have any horns yet  ) and pulled him away from the rail and as soon as I was clear of the fence I did a dismount that would have impressed the most seasoned rodeo cowboy. That was a wrap on the bull riding for me.

Even when I rode the mechanical bull at Gilley's I looked around and made SURE there weren't any fences near by. ;)

My childhood heroes were Lane Frost and Chris Ledoux.

I spent a lot of time competing in rodeos but on the timed side...only once on the back of a bull. I roped and bulldogged.

I’ve been on 4 bulls in my life for a total of around 12 seconds. Did it once in a rodeo and 3 times messing around. Much respect to any bull riders out there.

I rode a lot of saddle broncs and a couple of bare backs.
Rode two bulls at the same time.. First and last one.. He threw his head back and broke my jaw with his horn.

Momma raised some dummies, but they was my sister.

Ya know, it isn't too hard to see why bull riding is a bad idea. Just as effective as my little episode was the time I had to take a neighbor to the ER with a broken arm and this "cowboy" came in from the Gilley's rodeo arena.

Yep, been ridin' dem bull. His right leg was broken completely aloose at the knee, only hangin' together with skin and muscle. You can never unsee a thing lie that.

My brother and I grew up riding anything with hair on it, yearling bulls and scores of broncs.

I rode a few bulls at lit'l 'county rodeos' didn't win enough to make it pay...
The manure in the chutes would ruin your good wranglers and shirts.

They always buck'd out the saddle broncs before the bulls,
if'n a feller rode 'em good enough to make it to the pay window.
There would be buckle bunnies a plenty! ;) :D

When my son went to collage and was rodeoin', I told him I'd bank roll him.

But no bulls, just saddle broncs.

Bulls are intended for making more beef, not riding.

Back when I worked in engineering, our manufacturing plant had a tool designer/master machinist (Ron) with a brother who did the rodeo circuit.

Ron was a really good guy and I miss him. He never got rich, but he made a good living, had regular income and health care insurance. His brother loved the circuit and the lifestyle it afforded and liked to brag that he often earned $10,000 in 8 seconds. When Ron asked his brother how much he forked over for emergency room visits over the years, things got really quiet.

Thank you, but no.

When I was stationed up in Wa. State , There were some buddies from Nebraska and Kansas , some real cowboys . They talked me into going with them to what they called buck-outs . It was where they practiced bull and bronco riding . Being young and dumb , I let them talk me into it .

I remember gearing up , sitting on the bull , and next thing I know I was on my back looking at the sky . They helped me up , laughing their ***** off .

My one and only attempt at riding a bull . They tried to talk me into doing again . I may be not too smart , I did join the Corps , but I'm no fool .

I was down at the Denver Stock Show about 60 years ago. Jim Shoulders was due to ride a bull.. He was on crutches.. A couple of us lifted him up into the chute and down on the bull.

Jim took a suicide wrap around his wrist with the bull rope and said "Let him out!
Eight seconds later he unwound the rope around his wrist and fell off of the bull.

We went out and picked him up and carried him behind the chutes.
He grabbed his crutches. A reporter came and asked him "How he could stand to ride like that?"

Jim said "I cry all the way to the bank." He won $15,000.00 that week. That was a lot of money back then.
