First attempt a pictures..too big I think.

I was looking for the 95 gr 38 Spl mentioned in another thread (no joy yet, but they are here somewhere).

I did however find these jewels. I don't remember the exact year, but I think they are from the late '70s or early '80s. The load consists of two 000 buckshot. Heaven knows what velocity. I do remember shooting at 7 yds and the two buckshot struck sort of to point of aim, about six inches apart.

Note they are marked LE only.

These loads were "promoted" for situations where over penetration was a great concern, such as jail, prison, banks etc. situations.

I also seem to remember a 357 Mag load that had 3 000 buck.

I load two .457" round balls into a .45 Colt case and from a clean bore they will hit 1" apart at 25 yards. I don't shoot them very fast lest they strip and fail to engage the rifling. I think a couple of flat lead disks would be better, but I have never seen a mold for such a "bullet."

I did not know that Remington ever factory loaded this stuff.

Back in the 70s there was such a load made, along with a wide variety of others, for use on airplanes and in crowded cities. It used a stack of lead disks and was supposed to be like loading a shotgun shell full of coins. During testing they didn't sererate reliably and usually all stuck together and hit like a wadcutter. I have a Lee 410-116-WC mould that makes bullets that look like aspirin tablets. I've put two of them back to back and they did the same thing. I think they were too accurate to work right.

I had a couple boxes of the Multi-Ball loads. Still have a couple rounds of it somewhere.

The thing I used it for most was impressing my shooting buddies by shooting once and hitting twice. Had it in my house gun for a while too.

I posted these pictures and started a thread a couple years ago, and had some interesting reponses. Maybe that thread is still available in a search. I have not tested any yet, but plan to, and am curious if the chrono will give accurate results. I suspect it will not due to two projectiles passing thru very close to each other.

I looked back to 7/08 and didn't find it. A lot of posts; I might have missed it. Worth the effort though. I read a lot of your old posts that I had not seen.

I also have my doubts about getting a good reading, but I'll give it a try, hopefully this weekend. If it ever stops raining.

That would be verying interesting Charles, please let us know. I have several other tests lined up before I shoot any of mine thru the chrono, so probably won't get to it for awhile.

I would also like to know the results of your testing, as I have several boxes of these in .38 Spcl and .357, and have always been curious about the velocities obtained by Remington with this load.

Years ago, I cast some .457 RB from WW and sized them .452, 2 at a time in a Star lubricater, filled them up with lube between. This stuck them together, and provided plenty of lube. We loaded them in a Colt case on 8gr Unique, and crimped on the flat band on the front slug. They hit approx 6" apart, and roughly in a verticle string at approx 50yds. If I remember right these weighed approx 150gr for each ball. They made a double tap you could hear,and seemed to hit pretty hard.

I used these once. Recoil shifted the balls out of the cases,forward, and tied up the gun. Had to press them back into the cases with a screw driver while still loaded in the cylinder. Probably why we don't see much of it anymore.

I had the same problem. I only remember shooting them out of two guns, a 2" M-15, and a 2" Cobra. They worked OK in the 15, but jumped in the 15 oz Cobra.

I usually keep pretty good records, but I can't find a thing about these. I've looked at the Remington ammo lists I have (which is not comprehensive, by any means), and have found no information.

By any chance do you remember the year you shot them?

Ran 10 rounds over the machine this afternoon. Got a reading on only six rounds. Four generated "error" msg.

Ammunition:
Remington 38 Spl 140gr multiball stock #R38SMB Lot L21F00732 (I think)
Gun: S&W 14-3 6" bbl
Conditions:
57 degF 55%RH wind 21 mph lateral. gusts to 31

Average of 6 shots that registered 800 fps, High 827 fps, Low 771 fps, ES 53

All rounds fired individually, from the same chamber, to eliminate any variation due to bullet jump.

About what I would expect from an average 38 Spl wc, assuming these numbers are anywhere near correct.

Using the same chamber was a good idea, I probably would not have thought of that. I agree it is about what I would have expected, maybe even a little faster. Thanks for doing this test Charles!

Thanks for testing these. I have a couple boxes each of .38 and .357 put back. Did you ever get a chance to chrono the .357 loads?

I still have a box or two of the .357 Mag version. Tested it once out of a 3" Ruger SP101. I was pleasantly surprised. At fifteen yards the two balls struck within a few inches of poa and about two inches apart. Recoil was moderate. If memory serves, advertised velocity was around 1,100 fps. Can't say what the 3" Ruger produced. --c
