S&W 1911's get discussed here, no doubt. But far less often then the Sigma's and the M&P's. Plus I think people who like metal framed Smiths tend to like both the 3rd Gens and the 1911 platforms. I know a number of forum members who own both.

That class is called "boring 1911 class" and there are many 1911 forums already devoted to it

I know your just kidding and all but it seems to me that out of metal frame S&W guns, sigmas, M&Ps, and 1911s. That all the others would be considered the boring ones, since there is much less customising and there for uniqueness with those guns.
As for the op's question it is probably because the M&P and sigma lines are much more popular and so have a lot more posts on the topics pertaining to them. There is enough room inthe semi-auto forum to take care of all the metal frame gun topics if the M&P and Sigma have their own forum so IMO that is essentially why the M&P and Sigma have their own sub forum.
If you really want to only see posts about 1911s I suggest the 1911forum there is a lot of great people there, and for the most part all they talk about are 1911s.

Ya, I have been on them and they don't talk to much about the SW1911 its mostly about their their multi thousand dollar Wilsons, Kimbers, Colts, etc etc etc. A lot of people have been buying the SW1911 now a days and looking for others to share their info, experiences and costumizations. Seeing that SW made a 1911 line you would think the site would put them in the sub forum. A design that SW followed should have a sub forum imo. I can see where there is not enough talk on them (anywhere) but maybe with the sub forum more will visit the site and post. I currently have 5 1911s, and I am looking for a 6th one: a SW1911. I think S&W makes excellent firearms, and the 1911 platform and S&W are a great match! I've talked to several LGSs, and they all said they had one or more in the past, but they didn't sell, so they didn't keep them stocked. They are available on Gun Genie, and the price is good, so I may just order one.
It would be nice to have a 1911 sub-forum here, but there is one at the 1911 forum.

That is exactly my point - The S&W 1911 is a very, very, very good 1911. However, because it has the swartz safety and an external extractor it is frowned on by the 1911 hob knobbing snobs that most frequent the other 1911 forums.
Seeing as this is a dedicated S&W forum this is really where it needs to be - maybe someone can put a bug in the owners ear - if they need a moderator I'd be happy to help.

I must be a bit strange but I am not a fan of the sub-forum divisions.I like to see all the different S+W Semiautos discussed in one place where I can see the differences and comparisons of the various members of the family.When I took the leap to the world of semi's after I became a NRA Instructor I was able to see the CS9 and the 3913.You might think the differences between the two are insignificant but the slightly slimmer CS9 looked like it would fit my small hands better.I was able to go to a gun store,knew exactly which guns to put side by side,knew why I was doing it,and let my hands do the deciding.That might not have evolved so easily if I would have had to go to a "CS9"subforum and a "3913"subforum.Hell when I first came here the only thing that I truly"knew" was that I didn't want a Glock,wanted a S+W,and the rest was wide open......All the best and God Bless.....Mike

Sub forums are not created to honor or distinguish one gun over another. They are created because threads about those guns overwhelmed the main semi-auto forum.
Prior to their creation, if you had posted a thread about a 1911 it would have been "off the first page" and lost in the shear number of posts about Sigma's and M&P's in very short order. By removing those threads from the main forum your 1911 threads get more attention and are seen by more people.
We would prefer not to have any sub forums as it is preferable to have all semi-auto threads in one place. At the point that 1911 threads overwhelm all other threads in the semi-auto forum, we would consider a sub forum.

WoW - that's a shame as the 1911 is far superior to any of the other pistols you just mentioned, it's been around forever, and fan base is WorldWide - but hey I guess it's the cheap guns that get the attention, because there cheap $$$ - whatever

As I said, it has nothing to do with the quality (or lack there of), history or even my personal preference. It is all about traffic.
If and when the 1911 traffic is so large as to overwhelm the semi-auto forum, there will be a 1911 sub-forum.

I'm on board with Cruiser on this one. I'm a S&W fan (OK addict) of all flavors. I like them all and occasionally browse discussions on a whim. It's how I learn (and get interested in certain models.)
FWIW, I was not a fan of the M&P sub forum split off. I was pretty much a devout plastic gun haters until I got intrigued by some of the M&P discussions on this forum. ( Have owned dozens of other S&W's but had no interest in a plastic gun.) Eventually, based on banter/reviews here about fit , comfort and accuracy, I got curious enough to check one out. Now I own 3 M&P's. My point being that I would not have likely gone poking around in the plastic gun forum purposefully and therefor would have missed out. If I were voting, I'd like to see one semi auto forum again.
btw, I also own two S&W 1911's. Great guns!

Unless there is some significant bandwidth issue, - why not, what harm...? Honestly, it may bring monetary contributors.
If it's a matter of moderators I'm sure we could cover that I already volunteered - and I'm sure you could easily find another one or two others. Just sayin'

Why stop there? How about a M41 sub forum? M52? M39? M22a? While we are at it, shouldn't the M&P15, M29, M28, M27, M25, M24, M22, M21, M19, M18, M17, M16, M15, M14, M13, M12, M11, M10,M66, M65, M64, M63, M42, M40, M36, and M37 each have their own areas?
It isn't a band width issue. It isn't a moderator issue. It is a traffic issue. Out of 6000+ threads in the semi-auto areas only 183 have "1911" in the title. Not an overwhelming percentage.
All sub-forums are/were created due to traffic volume, not the other way around. When there is enough 1911 traffic to justify it, we will create it. Until then, things will remain as they are.
