Any thoughts on the Ambi Bolt Release

I've been shooting left handed since I got my Sport (due to problems with my right eye) and was thinking about adding a Troy Ambi Bolt Release. Any experience with them or other suggestions? Since I'm at it, occasionally I get hot brass on my face/neck when i creep up too close to the scope, has anyone added some type of deflector that they recommend? Or should i just try to stay back far enough?

I've been shooting left handed since I started shooting. So, I have to ask, why would you want one?

The bolt catch/release is on the left side of the gun. It's easy to operate with your trigger finger. The ambi bolt release is intended for right hand shooters to be able to release the bolt with their trigger finger.

Now, an ambi mag release I could understand.

Oh yeah, I forgot. The gun has a built in brass defector. It's that triangular lump just behind the ejection port. I've had brass come back at me, but less than 1 in 1,000 so, I don't see it as an issue. Does yours hit you more often than that?

I didn't have any hit me for the first 400-500 rounds or so, but now it seems to be about once every 10-20 rounds, and i was wondering if i was just inching my way too close or if it is ejecting differently or if there is something that could help.

Is your BCG lubricated enough? If it's dragging, I could see that causing weak ejection which could cause them to come back more than out.

As Rastoff stated, if shooting a RH upper lefty, the Ambi bolt release (BAD Lever) is kinda redundant.

But, I highly recommend an Ambi Safety and also a Ambi Norgon Magazine release - check out BATTLE ARMS DEVELOPMENT, INC.

The BAD lever is not considered an ambi bolt release, it is by definition an "assist device"....it simply gives the user another way of stopping the bolt or releasing it while still keeping your finger in the trigger guard. A true ambi bolt release would be something like this: Actually machined into the lower.

agreed.....I removed my Magpul BAD lever weeks ago because I never used it, and it felt cheap and gimmicky. If I had a true ambi lower that was built in that would be different.

we are not splitting hairs.....Magpul BAD lever is labeled as a Battery Assist Device, not an ambidextrous bolt release. I don't manufacture these things, and I'm not exactly sure what logic has to do with anything.....

Fair enough - I think the OP was asking about the various BAD lever options out there - Magpul, Troy, etc - I suspect not too many are willing to change lowers just to get an ambi bolt release . Nice idea for a LH build though.

However I still think ambi safety and mag release from Battle Arms or similar are valid choices.

agreed.....Battle Arms make some really good gear, albeit pricey. But everything is machined and top quality.

I still have mine installed, as a mostly LH shooter I have been working on my RH shooting. The "sloppiness" of it bothers me, to be honest, but pretty much everyone agrees it's a non-issue. Just annoying. A few shims on the roll pin would probably tighten it right up, but probably not worth the effort.

Clean it. Dirty ammo will make things do that.

For the brass in the face have you tried different ammo ? I did some asking on my MP9 here on the site when my better half was shooting it it would hit her in the face. She's a lefty. Keep her on the Blazer Brass no more brass in the face. I put the UMC in it and it'll get her every time. Worth a try anyway. I do also notice with the sport model anyway some brands are in a nice group only a short distance from where I'm shooting and other brands will shoot out all over and at different distances

Made me laugh! I are a lefty too.
I can shoot either handed, and practice it a bit. I feel the controls are adequate, so I don't bother with the switch to ambi parts, and I don't buy leftie rifles.

The LAST thing I need to do is to confuse a lefty........

Thanks for all the great thoughts...I think i keep my BCG pretty well lubed, I lube it after cleaning and then give it another dose right before shooting. I haven't tried different ammo though which is probably a good idea (i have been using a lot of the Tula cheap stuff - but in the beginning I did use better brass stuff).
