Anybody a guitar collector?

My guitar affliction is the main reason I don't have nicer guns.

I wondered who around here plays too. That is a good price for the Mex Tele. A new mex would be at least $400, and double or more for an American made one. The M in the serial # will verify if it's Mex. The weakest link is the pickups. If you replace the pickups & wiring harness with American ones found on ebay, it will sound as good an an American Tele. Most folks who grew up with vintage Fenders do not like the feel of the newer ones, because the necks are 1/16" wider, and have a flatter fingerboard radius.... has some benefits, but makes a Strat not feel like a Strat, to me.

I've been playing since 1975, and I guess collecting too, since I have approx 14 instruments, including the banjo, and bass.

I have a few Fender and Gibson electrics from the 60s and 70s, a few Martin acoustics, an Ibanez, Ovation, & Kramer aluminum necked bass. Have a couple of tube Marshall, Vox and Fender amps. Played in several rock bands, wedding bands, acoustic duo, etc. One of my bands did Gel, by Collective Soul during the 90s. Doing alot of fingerpicking around the house these days. Most recent tune I learned a few weeks ago was Emerald Eyes, an instrumental from the Jimmy Page Outrider album.

You Tele guys would love my friends B Bender. I think he wants to sell. I played it once when he got it. I'm not a Tele player but it played real well. I'd buy it if I didn't have more guitars than I play. I've been thinning the herd and am down to a few that I couldn't part with.
My old Vox Hurricane is been through Hell and back. When i got it the bridge was ripped out of the wood so I routed somd hard wood in and installed a Leo Quan Badass. with Seymor Duncan pickups.
My Hagstrom Viking pictured in my previous post is worn out and was butchered long before I got it. Oddly,The Hagstrom played the best for so many years. Great necks on the old Hags!!! Nothing like them.
Acoustics? Wow, I see some nice ones posted here. I have a Takamine. It's a keeper.

With only one I'm not a collector, but I think I may carry the gene. I still can't play the one I got last July worth a damn, but already I'm thinking that maybe there is room for more than one in the music corner with the Victorian pump organ and the kit virginal that I don't play either, though I keep them in good repair in case unanticipated skill should break out. I bet a good instrument is embarrassed to be played by a mediocre or even poor performer; if there are others to share the misery, any one guitar won't bear the brunt of the humiliation.

I can bend a couple of notes on a Blues Harp, but not good enough that anyone would pay me to do it. Or even sit still while I tried, for that matter.

Here's July's axe, a Gretsch Chet Atkins Country Gentleman that I gave myself as a birthday present. It's sounding better when I pick it up, but under my control it still looks way better than it sounds.

I'm not a collector but I've owned a lot of guitars over the years. I currently have only one, a Taylor 814CE. Unfortunately, due to an arthritic condition, I can no longer play. Here she is.

My latest electric guitar purchase (last week) is a 1958 Gibson Flying "V" reissue. Korina wood. Between my son and I, we also have a Gibson SG Standard in Heritage Cherry, a few Strats including a Classic 60's Reissue, several Teles (two Standards, one Blacktop with dual humbuckers), a couple Les Pauls, a Peavey Raptor, Fender Jazz and Precision Basses, an Ibanez bass, and a Yamaha steel-string acoustic...

Amplifiers? Let's not even go there....

I love 'em all, but the Music Man Axis is just such a sweet guitar - desert island pick would have to be the natural Axis...

Here is my other old workhorse, Gibson ES 330 that I bought new in January, 1964. The fret bars are gettin kinda worn on this one.

I really wanted to see that one. I was at the Hard Rock in London and had the privilege of having my picture taken with a few nice guitars: a 1954 Strat onced owned by Duane Allman sn 0003, Jeff Becks early Esquire, Joe Walsh's '56 Strat, a Pete Townshend custom Les Paul and the Flying V that Hendrix played at the Isle of Wight. The only guitar I couldn't touch? Elvis Presley's Super 400.

I'm not really a collector but I do have one beauty. It's a 1966 Mosrite Combo model that I bought new. I must admit that I am missing the original Mosrite strap but the instrument shows very little wear and is all original and electrically fine.

It was posted Tuesday during the problem period. I posted once, it looked like it posted, then it went away. I tried to delete to re-post and I did it again with the same result. Then I started getting the error messages. I could not tell what was going on and figured the whole thing wound up in never-never land.

I once had a mid 60's Mosrite Mark II. Like a complete idiot, I traded it for a used-up dirt bike in the late 80's. Sure would love to have it back, had a great sound. Looked just like the blue one shown HERE.

We're headed to guitar lessons tonight with a new instructor. Several years ago, my son learned the basics from a guy that leaned toward folk type music. CCR was heavy metal for him. My son likes rock, so he lost interest with the 1st teacher and started teaching himself via DVD's, YouTube, etc. The kid can play some impressive riffs (Van Halen, etc.) and I have no idea how he learned the stuff. He's pretty motivated, so I think it will be fun to have him schooled by a professional that can teach him the kind of music he likes. My son definitely seems to have the skills (I don't).

cant say as I collect guitars per se, but I do play and have a few.
Since I play in church fairly often, and I am the most skilled of the guitarists in that venue, I am often asked for recommendations. So I find myself test driving guitars from time to time.
What cracks me up sometimes is when Im walking out of a shop and the proprietor says "Come in any time and jam out, we'll even plug you in " with enthusiasm.
Am I really that good ???

I started playing guitar in 1965, still have quite a few guitars.
Years back I got into strictly playing bass.
Since our groups played 100% Beatles music I bought German made Hofner basses, same as Sir Paul played.

I don't consider myself a collector, but I've been playing in bands since 1966, so I've managed to acquire a few good instruments over the years.

Here's the guitar I played primarily during my high school and college years.

Gibson 1953 ES-175

Then for about forty some-odd years, I played mostly bluegrass music, primarily mandolin. I was privileged to be with some excellent bluegrass musicians with whom I recorded in the 1970's. Most of them were quite a bit older than I was. In fact, you can still find some of our albums at garage sales for twenty-five cents.

Gibson 1921 F-4, Gibson 1985 F-5L

But occasionally I'd play bluegrass guitar.

Martin 1985 D-28, Martin 1975 D-18

Nowadays, I'm playing in a Southern rock/country rock band and usually play one of these.

A couple of old made-in-America Fender Telecasters.

or...a couple of Gibson Les Pauls.

Occasionally, somebody will ask me to play bass.

Fender Precision bass.

Anyway, it's a fun hobby and I've enjoyed it for many years. I used to be OCD on myself, trying to play every lick just perfectly. I think I've gotten smarter over the years and now play just to have fun. If I make a mistake on stage....who cares? Just as long as everybody is having a good time.

Just started playing again after a 20 year break . I gotta 1967 Hofner 500/1 Beatle Bass that is a real sweety and just bought a new Rickenbacker 4003 in fireglo . Now I just need to learn to play em !

Mosrite? Nice! Haven't seen one of those in years, always wanted one but was out of my budget. Loved the Ventures, still have several LPs from the 60's.

The O.P. was talking about his son's collection. My eldest is a very avid player and his collection has blossomed into a some very nice stuff. Here are a few of his...1987 V serial number 57 reissue Mary Kaye strat, his American Standard strat work horse, a Buddy Guy strat with an autographed strap and back plate, 2 Gibson SGs, a standard and a '61 reissue in very rare sapphire blue. Lastly is a Paul Reed Smith Limited edition Custom 24 with a Brazilian rosewood fret board, hybrid hardware and a "10" top that I gave him from my collection this week (one of 500).

Between he and I we have over 40 guitars. It's a pretty cool hobby and something I really enjoy sharing (and playing) with him.

In addition to my son's collection, he talked me into buying some as "investments". I've enjoyed doing it and figure that worst case, I could sell them for what I've invested. I've got a couple of guitars that were pretty much bought at retail price, but most were good deals found on Reverb or eBay. I now have a basement full of guitars. LOL.

My son's band has cut an EP and is doing pretty well. It's country music with some Rock influences, but not really like the mainstream stuff you hear on the radio. Pretty good, I think. The band is Nine Miles to Nowhere.
