Anybody else enjoy the story telling songs of Marty Robbins?

Marty is my most favorite singer of all. I love all his music but the ballad of the Alamo and Mr. Shorty are at the top of the heap. " and the tick of the clock on the wall says death would wait 10 seconds more". " an there on his hip was a short barreled bad 44" " mr. shorty, my friend"

Lucky to have made a few trips west from Alabama to enjoy a fall hunt, many times, all the accumulated CD's of Marty go in the CD player and we drive 12-24 hours west and never stop listening to the Marty songs on the way. Everything is right with the world on those travel days west listing to one the the greatest male voices to every hit a recording studio. " and he takes his hat off slowly to the men of Alamo, to the thirteen days of glory at the siege of Alamo" Wow, what songs. They never stop making the hair stand up on my neck. Is this why I love 44 pistols?

I've known more than one person who claimed to not like Country or at least said that they didn't like "old Country."

Usually a play-through of El Paso followed by the complete Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs album will have them putting the album on repeat for a few days.

Such a melodious voice singing songs that tell a real story...there will never be another like him.

I saw Marty in concert after he released his album The Legend. He is quite the cut up. He got real serious and told the crowd that artists don't title albums, producers, etc do that. They called this album The Legend. I thought that was a embarrassing he stated. It should have called THE SUPER LEGEND!
While there are several good balladeers in cw music the kings are Marty Robbins & Johnny Cash.

Every time I hear a Marty R song it takes me right back to my
time in El Paso. Staggering out of Wazoo at 3:00am, back in those days the streets were deserted at that time of night. That
was 48 years ago, seems like yesterday.

He was one of my dad's favorites, and he's one of mine, also.

My dad's favorite song was, "Mr. Shorty". My dad, like myself, was 5'7". I always wondered if that was the reason!

Marty was one of the very best storytellers in song. A couple other favorites of mine are Bob Dylan and Jimmy Buffet, but listening to a Marty Robbins is like watching a western movie!

I borrowed that line from someone else, I have to admit.

Always liked most everything Marty did. Some Memories Just Won't Die is one of my favorites, along with the better known one's, El Paso, El Paso City, etc. Good music.

Yes, always have liked Marty Robbins songs. Wish I could have seen him when he was a Nascar driver too!

BTW, there is a name for songs that tell a story, it is Ballad.

Yes, I've always enjoyed Marty Robbins.

There's a very funny video on YouTube showing Merle Haggard and Marty Robbins together, and Merle does his imitation of Robbins. It's hilarious!

Merle Haggard & Marty Robbins - Merle Sings Marty - YouTube

Thanks for posting that link. I saw that years ago and had forgotten all about it. Good stuff there.
I much prefer the older CW to much of today's but sadly it doesn't get the AirPlay at least not here.
I don't know if it's a steady thing but a few years ago on vacation we were traveling down the west coast of Michigans lower peninsula. A radio station played nothing but the older stuff. It was great!
It's sad that this genre will be forgotten along with great talents such as Marty, JC, Ray Price, and so many more.

Ate at Rosas Cantina in El Paso this spring when I went down to see my son at Fort Bliss. Stood at the back door and looked at the Franklin mountains imagining Marty riding down from the heights.

Rosas is a Marty Robins, dive bar, Marty R theme, good food, nice folks.

El Paso was one of the songs that I grew up with. Strange, I hadn't heard it for years, but yesterday some of the lyrics were running through my head, and today I see this post.....

Best Regards, Les

Now if you could only do that with the next lottery's winning numbers :D

Our little dog, PC, absolutely loves Marty Rpbbins (and Boxcar Willie).

She gets excited when I open up Youtube and play the El Paso Trilogy (no one mentioned there are three related songs about El Paso).

She sits on my lap and watches the computer screen and loves it when I find an old Grand Ole Opry with Marty on it.
