Hey people, 2 guns 2 different problems.

So the other day I decided to shoot some JHP through my shield 9. Third shot had a FTE. So I made a thread and said I would shoot some more of that ammo to see what happened. Sure enough had more FTE with the hornady JHP while the crappy Tula woked fine.

While there I also took my new M&P 40c that I bought just the other day. I shot 2 boxes of hornady critical defense and a box of Tula. Had several FTF with the hornady.

I went again today for the sole purpose of using different JHP. I took both guns, 1 box of hornady American gunner and 1 box of Winchester PDX1 for the shield 9. For the 40c 1 box of hornady critical defense and 1 PDX1.

Again the same problems with the hornady ammo. 2 misfires from each box. 0 misfires from the Winchester. Here are pics, 40c on the left, shield on the right.

I'm finding this very strange, the fact that I'm the only one to complain.

Do the ends of the bullets feel rough??Mine do, but I'm NOT having any problems with CRITICAL DEFENCE in my BG.380

Hmmmm I think I'll stay away form the Hornady then. I use Federal and the Winchester PDX1 with my shield 9 and my FS .40. Zero problems
THey both eat Hydra shock like candy too.
I pikced up a box of Remington HP's real cheap at Wallmart this week. going to try those tomorrow with the shield . I'll let you know how that goes

Yup Hornady they tend to tarnish..BRASS.. nuff said..... every blue moon a Polish My tips. ..also try a heavyier gran or lighter
. But for around 22$ in a 400 $ auto gun. You cant not not expect A few hiccups
. This is why malfunction drills are important

I have a Shield 9. I had one FTE with Remington Golden Saber 147g early on. Since then I have shot 218 consecutive rounds of Golden Saber 147 without a problem. They are also the most accurate rounds of any type I have shot through my Shield (3700 total rounds).

In addition, I have had good results with Hornady Critical Duty 135g +P rounds. I have shot 150 of them without a single failure of any kind. They are less accurate than the Golden Sabers, but I've improved with them with practice.

I also have a 40c. It fires anything. I've had only 2 FTEs in 5800 rounds. I use Winchester PDX1 180g as my SD rounds, although Remington Golden Saber 180g rounds also work well in my 40c.

@garddog56 yes the rubber/gel or whatever that is in the hollow point feels rough and seems to be getting stuck on the feed ramp.

@kmanick not at all curious? Lol

Very common gun, very common ammo, both very popular. I seem to be in the minority here. If it wasn't so expensive, I'd ask you to try hornady, just to see what happens.

@ Smith Wesson the FTF on the 40, yeah, but take a look at the FTE on the shield 9. They're not complete stove pipes, you can rack them out, they are too far in there, you have to lock the slide back, then dig out that shell.

@ swsig yeah that's what I typically hear. Either, my guns are special, or my hand is special.

*shrugs

Hmm, I just posted a thread about switching to hornaday critical defence. Maybe I'll just pick up a couple boxes and see how my Ruger LC9S likes it. 1000+ rounds through it and the only ammo it doesn't like is the Independence aluminum case stuff. The LC9S is my EDC. I have also found that my 9mm sheild doesn't like the aluminum case stuff either.

No, and I shoot it in 3 different 9mms and several .40 S& W's, and using Crit. Def, Crit. Duty, American Gunner, Custom XTP ... you get the picture. Not meaning this to minimize your result. Just all have been good in my guns.

Oh, I've had PLENTY of problems with my Shield. You can read about them here: http://smith-wessonforum.com/smith-...eld-rsa-one-more-time.html?highlight=rsa+time

In my response to your post, I simply cut to the chase and listed the rounds that have actually worked well as I sorted out my Shield.

Regarding my 40c, I was validating the goodness of PDX1 rounds, and presenting an alternative that also has worked for me with the 40c.

And I wholeheartedly agree that my 40c and my hand are special. :D

I have put about 50 rounds of the 115 Hornady Critical Defense through my 9mm Shield with no issues. In fact I have put over 2k rounds through my Shield with absolutely no problems.

The following ammo has been used:
American Eagle 115 & 124
Blazer Brass 115 & 124
Some bulk no name stuff from Dicks 115
Hornady Critical Defense 115
Bunch of handloads. 124

I carry Hornady CUSTOM 147 gr. XTP in my Shield 9-accurate and reliable! I've had no issues with either of my Shields (9 & 40) with any ammo I've run through them. My guns are stock, all I've done is clean/lube per manual and run good quality, US made factory ammo in all bullet weights. I have 11 handguns, 10 of them semi-autos, 9 of them S &W's and I've never had an issue with any of them. The M&P's have become a favorite of mine! :-)

I was told

Those were more for shooting for protection; not practice. It's good to know there are misfires. I'd hate to need it for a break in and have that happen.

No problem with Hornady here

I have shot over 200 rounds of Hornady Critical Defense 115 gr. through my 9mm Shield--all flawless. I also have shot over 150 of the Speer Gold Dot LE 115 gr. through without a hiccup and rotate both as my carry ammo.

Sounds like your firearms don't like Hornady ammo. I had a Springfield 1911 one time that didn't like Speer Gold Dots. My other 1911's ate the Gold Dots no problem.
Some guns with eat anything.. Some are picky.

I pretty much use Critical Duty 135g exclusively. Have never had a problem with hundreds of rounds between Glock 19, 17, Walther PPQ, PPS, and near a half-dozen M&Ps of all shapes/sizes. Weird.

From what I've come acorss on-line, and particularly on the Walther forum, the Hornady HP's seems to have the most complaints from Walther PPS owners (though, to be fair, lots of guys have no issues with them.)

Hornady Critical Defense 9mm also will NOT cycle in my (and many others) Springfield xDS-9. It snags on the feed ramp constantly. My xDS-9 has zero failures with a myriad of other ammos.

OTOH, my BG 380 loves Hornady CD.

My Shield has 750 rounds of different types and weights. Have not had an issue with any. Shot federal HST 124 through it last night without an issue.

No problems here with either Hornady Critical Defense or Federal HST 124 in my Shield
