I would like to see how much difference there is.

I've been carrying my HiPower lately AIWB and I'd like to see if the dimensions are even close because I may have an opportunity to get a 10-5 tapered barrel 4".

Trying to find a good carry gun while my 442 is at the mother ship.

I so want a model 10 eventually. Among others...... Would be nice if I could carry it.

I don't have a comparative photo to show you, but I have carried both in the past, and I can tell you that the issue will not be "size" as such.

The very different shape and the width of the cylinder of the revolver make it just ... different. You are either comfortable with it or not. I never was. I found not just my Hi-Power, but a full-size 1911 more comfortable to carry concealed than even a snub-nosed K-frame.

You really have to try it out with different holsters and positions; pictures won't do squat ;)

Apples and oranges.... both can be carried concealed. I've carried a Hi-Power and a 4" K-frame (19) IWB and out....... I don't carry cocked and locked anymore...... tend to carry a Smith 3913 , PC Shorty-9 and just built a FankenSmith 6915.........

But the two guns you're talking about are totally different in every way......

It really comes down to grips...once I had a thin set of boot grips on my 4" N frame it carried pretty damn well in a pancake style holster. Unless you're gettin' a snubbie, daily carry when dressed lightly could prove difficult.

I carried a 5" 1911 IWB for the longest...and still do from time to time...it really comes down to what you're willing to deal with.

Yeah, I love single actions for shooting but I'm not crazy about them as a defensive gun. It's only while I'm waiting for my 442 to come back from the factory. Or whatever it is I get (hammer stud broke). Which is why I'm trying to maybe find something else in the meantime.

Rick, it would only be a temporary situation. Not every day long term.

I have carried both a K frame revolver and a Browning Hi-Power. I carried both of them in shoulder holsters. No problem with either.

I have also carried 2" K frame revolvers IWB. Also with no problem.

It is all a matter of what is comfortable for you.

I'd look for a 2 1/2" (or 3" :D) 19 or 66 myself...... .38 or .357...... round butt.... or a 915...... again "apples and oranges" but both make great carry and general purpose .357 or 9mm.

I have both and depending on which way the wind blows, carry whichever one suits me. Really, in the 4o'clock position IWB, they take up the same amount of space. 4" k-frame IWB holsters are a little harder to come across. (I use government 1911 holsters for my HiPowers)
A spare mag in the pocket is a nice way pf carrying 13 more rounds, vice 2 speedloaders. I greatly prefer to shoot the k-frame, but all things considered I prefer to carry the HiPower.

Here you go.

If you can carry a Hi Power, you can carry a 4" K-frame.

EDC is J frame 637-2, however have carried the Browning HP and the Model 10 for some hiking and field events. My carry position is 4 o'clock on belt rig.

Both the HP and the Mod 10 are good in holsters but for EDC I still revert to the J Frame snubbies.

Even for field /hiking events, My Mod 65 or 66 in 357 have replaced the Model 10, but if you can snag a Mod 10 at a decent price it would easily hold you over till your gun comes back.

If you just want a Model 10 that's fine, but I agree with Absalom, it won't carry like your Hi-Power, at least in my opinion. If you need something to replace your 442 you might try a Shield. Both M10 and P35 are big, heavy guns.

I don't have a picture of a 4" Model 10, but I can show you a 4" Model 15 and a Hi Power.

The first major difference is in the widths involved. The Hi Power's width is pretty evenly distributed with the grip being the widest but with the slide not being far behind along its entire length, while the revolver is widest in the cylinder. If you avoid Target grips the width is the butt can be a bit less.

What that means is that a revolver often feels thinner over all than a semi-auto pistol, and it can be easier to conceal and more comfortable.

Probably the most critical difference is the distance from trigger guard to end of barrel, as that affects how low the end of the barrel is in a OWB or IWB holster. The muzzle of a 4" K frame revolver rides about an inch lower than a Hi Power with it's 4.685" barrel. Plus the revolver is longer in depth from top strap to bottom of trigger guard than a Hi Power is from top of slide to bottom of trigger guard, and that is reflected in the size and shape of the holster. On the other hand, the more circular shape of a revolver holster tends to blend and conceal a bit better than the more rectangular shape of a semi-auto holster.

So there are pros and cons, but the two are just "different"

-----

Personally, I carried a Hi Power IWB for years and had no issues with it. I also carried a 3" Model 13 revolver IWB for years and had no issues with it either.

However a 4" K frame revolver ends up with the muzzle being about 1" lower, and that extra 1" is enough to make is impractical for IWB carry, when sitting down, bending, etc.

Here's a 2 1/8" Model 60.

A 3" SP101 or Model 60 is a very close match to a Hi Power in length and height, and a clear winner in width.

IMHO, a 3" K frame is as close to perfection as it gets for a concealed carry revolver and compares well to a Hi Power, but "feels" nicer in all day concealed carry due to the thinner barrel as opposed to the slide and barrel on the Hi Power.

After reading this thread and rereading the op, in my opinion you should get yourself a model 10. Yes, it can easily be carried concealed. Neither a BHP nor a model 10 S&W would be my first choice for CC, but with either you would be more than well armed. If you need any justification to buy a k frame Smith, and one of the most popular and classic firearms of all time, well there you have it!

I'm 5'8", 175 lbs with a gut. I wear a military uniform during the day and cargo shorts with a button up shirt that fits when I'm not at work.

On the unusual occasion that I'm not carrying a revolver, I carry a FN HP AIWB in a 1911 Gov't holster. However, the revolver I carry AIWB is a 4" M29. A local holster maker made a leather IWB holster that I modified just a bit and it works great. I find a 4" revolver is perfect for AIWB carry because the longer barrel keeps the gun flatter while a short barrel allows my gut to push the butt out and print more. As always, the key to carrying AIWB comfortably is getting the right holster.

Sometimes I carry 4 o'clock and switch to my 3" M629, but that's mostly because I love that gun and want to carry it some, and it carries better at 4 o'clock.

Anyway, a revolver cylinder is certainly wider than a BHP, but it's still doable unless you wear tight clothes.

Wow, impressive. And we're the same height. I'm a lot skinnier than you. No judgments. I used to be 175 before I got lyme disease. Now I'm 135. Boooooo...

I don't think the cylinder would bother me on the model 10. I think the only things that might be concerning are the square butt and how low the barrel will go while I'm sitting because I am so skinny. But I suspect it might be OK.

I like the pics of the rear of the two together. IMHO, the K frames look so much thinner overall. And the HiPower really isn't a big gun. The slide is thinner than a Glock and I think that makes it easier to carry.

The stocks on the Victory taper a good amount. I never really realized that. More than magnas....

I think the other big challenge is finding the right holster that didn't cost an arm and a leg.

Some really great help in here. I really appreciate it guys. Part of me wants to go up to that LGS and snag that 10-5 they had for a trade. They said they were light on .45's and seemed interested in my bringing it by. (XD45). They may be more motivated than my local LGS to give me a fair value on that gun. And the gun store by me doesn't have any K frames. All J frames. Which is good too. But they were totally playing down the value of my gun.
