Anybody Still Like the Music of the Greatest Generation?

Love that Big Band Music. It was about 12 years before my time, but I guess I like it because my folks played it when I was growing up.
Tom, if your band is ever playing in Augusta, let me know. I would like to hear you guys play.

My wife and I love the Big Bands. I remember growing up in the late '40s & early '50s when the BBs got plenty of air time on the radio.

I had the opportunity to see Harry James, in person, twice. One of the all time great horn players. Pure, sweet, clean sound and never a clinker. It was an honor and pleasure to hear that man play!

Glen Miller anytime. Benny Goodman with Lionel Hampton on vibes. The list is endless and the genius of the music is ageless.

Tom Turner, I loved your post. That is my kind of music too. I don't play trumpet now, but I majored in music in college and trumpet was my major instrument. I listened to the video of the band playing American Patrol. Nice solo. I've played that many times...first time over fifty years ago!

Now days I play piano and keyboards as well as sing in a choral group. Tonight we are rehearsing with the Signature Symphony in Tulsa to perform Carl Orff's Carmina Burana this weekend.

My keyboard playing is all standards. Here is a few tunes on my blog:

And here's Gutpile at the keyboard.

Oh my, yes! We're talking serious music here!

Although I spend a lot of my time now playing bluegrass guitar, I was raised on old-time country, western swing, and of course, the big band stuff. Still love it all. And I consider Duke Ellignton to have been America's greatest composer.

It has been said that 90 percent of everything is s***, and I think that's about the best way to describe what passes for popular music these days.

Nah, never heard a Glenn Miller song.

First movie I ever remember is Jimmie Stewart & June Alyson in Glenn Miller story.

I have hours of big band music on LP's, Tapes and CD's.

My 10 year old daughter even likes the old stuff. We get on youtube and listen to the Andrew Sisters, Glenn Miller and others. One of her favorites is Girl from Kalamazoo but all time favorite is Boogee Woogee Bugle Boy from Company B.

it's nice she likes the music too, but I bet what she really loves is spending time with dad that way

Here's one of my favs from that era from the man who put the drums out front:

However, as always, the envelope is pushed. Even GK can't compare to this KID. I bet even Louis Belson didn't envision playing with three left pedals alone when he started playing double bass:

Imagine what this kid is going to be like when he's 30. Watch the one-hand rolls.

No. Looks like most forum members like it. I never cared for it. To each his own.
A friend of my wife hates all kinds of music. I don't understand it, but that's the way it is.

I don't hate all music. I grew up in the 70s and 80s listening to music from the 60s (Rolling Stones, Who, Doors, Hendrix) 70s (AC/DC, Kiss, Led Zepp) and 80s (Ratt, Motley Crue, Tesla).

One member mentioned www.wmkvfm.org in Cincinnati. My favorite station for Big Band music and for the old time radio dramas that they play every day from 11 AM to Noon (Eastern)and from 7 PM to 11 PM Saturdays. Listen in and you'll enjoy the station too. A number of the hosts played in most of the bands mentioned and tell stories about their experiances.

I never meant to imply that. I learned to appreciate a wide variety of music. Maybe it had to do with learning to play an instrument. I like classical, big band, old rock, new rock, country, dixieland jazz and some modern jazz. I however can't get in to rap and some other type of modern stuff. I can't see how someone sitting in a car where the windows are puffing in and out could not experience pain...the music is bad enough.

This brings back memories of when I played for a dance band in high school. Do just guitars and drums do it for you or do you appreciate this?

Why didn't you just say Big Bands. As far as I'm concerned these are one of americas greatest assets an they are and always have been some of my favorite listening. Of course I also like polkas, bluegrass, classical, cajun, celtic and more.
