Just picked up my 15-22 my FFL tonight, bought it from Bud's (hooray!).

Gave it a good look over, looked good at the time. But now I'm wondering if they sold me a used firearm. Thoughts?

Here's why I'm questioning:

1) The hand-guard was devoid of the "Kick Brass" cover.

2) The instruction manuals and such look a little worse for wear.

3) There were some scratches on the polymer frame (nothing horrible, but noticeable when playing with your new toy).

4) The rifle itself was filthy. I spent a good hour and a half stripping and cleaning the thing. I ran a bore snake down the thing, so I can't really tell how dirty the bore was.

5) There were no spent casings in the box. (do they do that for the 15-22's? I had some in my GLOCK box, just wondering)

6) The feed ramp (or rather the face of what the feed ramp would be) had some wear already. Again, nothing crazy, but you know.

Can anyone tell me if I'm being paranoid? Or does S&W have some crappy Q.C.? Is there any kind of way to check the serial number?

I'm not too worried, since the gun has a lifetime warranty, but you know, when you dump a chunk of change like this, you want to know you're getting what you paid for.

Thanks for the help! I look forward to feeding the addiction.

Purchased mine from buds and had no appearance issues. Also I don't believe I had the kick brass wrapping either. Mine did not come with fired casing. I am not sure if this is required for rifles, as I have never seen a fired casing with one. Buds has been nothing but good to me.

I believe the fired casing(s) only come with handguns. Can't speak for the rest of the things you mentioned.

Never bought anything from Bud's. Have to say that the 2 15-22's I bought at a LGS had the kick brass sleeve on the hand guard. However, they do take them off display models. (at least all the local stores in my area)

Haven't bought anything from Bud's I would ask the employees who work there about the issues your asking us here maybe they can shed some light. :)

Doubtful Bud's sold you a used weapon as new.

Someone from the shop might have 'tested' it but it's still considered a new weapon until registered.

Were the rail covers in the box?? Locking Cable?

I bought my 15/22 back in June off GunBroker and it didn't have the 'kick brass' cardboard hand rail, either.

MOF my rail covers weren't in my box but LaRue's Index Clips were on my 'I wantz' list anyhow, so I clipped thoses on instead.

Thanks! It's weird that some come with the Kick brass marketing and some don't.

I have the MOE version too. No rail covers either. Yes to the locking cable. I checked the box, serial numbers matched and what looks to be a date of 10/03/2013, whatever that references.

Maybe it was a floor model at the shop and that explains the lack of the cardboard hand-guard marketing and the wear on the breach face (dry firing perhaps?). I always hate that my LGS won't sell a NIB gun, and makes you buy the floor model that's been touched, dry fired, torn apart, groped, and who knows what else. That's why I wanted to buy online, thinking it'd be prestine from the factory.

Who knows, live and learn I guess. Thanks everyone for the input!

When mine came from GB (Picked up at my FFL's POB) he had already opened the box and inspected the weapon and called my attention to the residue on the bolt face .

He said "More than likely someone from the GS you have purchased it from has fired the weapon."

Wasn't any big deal to me......At least if the gun had a malfunction it was in the right place to do it.

Took it home, cleaned it up (No noticeable bore residue) inspected it carefully (especially for the fit of the upper and lower) and loaded it up w/some .22LR snap caps and played w/the trigger pull, loading and unloading and whatever.

Fun rifle, relatively cheap to shoot, great for a beginner to the AR platform and beyond. I gave $525 for the rifle, then another $20 to my FFL guy so my final cost was $545, back on June 1.

Enjoy dude, but keep a tight hand on yer wallet cuz yer 'I wantz' list is gonna grow and grow.

Good timing tho, with Christmas right around the corner. Good time to start looking at optics and some quality mounts!

Hope you aren't Jewish!

Already have a wish list on Amazon filled with stocking stuffers:D

My poor wife...

That sounds strange to me, did you take pics as you unpackaged it? If so send them to Buds and see what they say, they'll probably have you send it back and shoot you out another.
I bought 3 from Buds exactly a year ago and all where in new condition with locks, new manuals and yes the KickBrass sleeves where on the rails.

I bought my 15-22 moe from buds. New. Came with lock, rail gaurds, moe clip new Manuel etc.
definitely call or email buds support sounds like you go the shaft and got a used gun. You really should've checked it out at your FFL dealer and refused the purchase. They would shipped it back and got you a new one. (For future reference)

It Was Good

At least for me that is. I bought mine from Bud's two years ago. There was a minimal amount of dirt in the bore which could have been from a test fire or from a less than spotless packing area. It did have the KickBrass sleeve and all the accompanying regular stuff. I used their in-house credit so I had to pay a lifetime warranty which was a pain considering that S&W already covers that. Anyway, it was still good that I bought a Marlin 60 from them a few months later.

I bought two guns from Bud's, a S&W 617 and a Springfield Armory M1A. Both were clean and had all the parts, papers etc. The 617 had the spent cartridge, the M1A did not.

I've turned down more than one gun over the years that has been damaged from handling. The dealers usually shrug their shoulders and put the gun back on the shelf.

The ONLY way I buy a floor/demo model of anything is with a healthy discount, as basically I consider it used. Any dealer that refused to give me something NIB will never get any of my money.

UPDATE

So I contacted S&W customer service. They said I was more than welcome to send it to them and they'd give it a once over.

Love that great CS and lifetime warranty! :D

Agree. That's why I bought online, thought it'd be a lock for NIB.

Have bought new & used guns (and ammo, and accesories) from Buds. I am located in Lexington KY where their brick & mortar store is.
Never had a problem with them ever.
They are the best thing to ever happen to prices for us as consumers!
I know from talking to them that some guns ship strait from their wholsalers to your FFL, some guns they do take possession of first. They are a massive operation and would they risk $100+ millions in sales to make an extra $75 on passing a used gun off as new? They can easily sell 500 guns in one day, no way they have time to switch out a couple used guns.
Sounds to me like S&W shot your gun several times, they are notorious for being the worst about how their factory tested guns look. Not as bad as they were a few years ago, but I wouldn't be surprised if I rec'd a S&W gun that was dirty.
Now, if it didn't clean up then I'd send it back to S&W for sure.
